A great example of what's going on right now and how Valve yet again underestimated the immaturity of the TF2 community (if you can call it that). The best Valve can do now is to revert the game to the initial release state, with no unlocks, no gamemodes and no extra maps. That would be fun.

I agree completely with Chaos. Perhaps if valve, when they first learned of the idle tool, had put a post on their blog asking people not to idle then this decision might have been justified.

Yes - quite agree. There was no previous limit on what could be done in relation to idling. Yet *another* decision that proves that the drop system was ill conceived and an utter waste of time by Valve. To suddenly punish people without prior warning is complete B/S.

BTW.. why the f*ck do I have a halo in my backpack and WTF !!!!! I now understand why.. and I'm struck dumb by Valve's stupidity. Well done Valve.. you've started a civil war in the TF2 community!

I would love them to do this !!! I've said all along all these updates are shite and ruining the game.

Yeah I'm pretty sure I've deleted pretty much every single weapon I gathered from achievements in favor of the same weapons that I got per random drop with higher levels (dunno why, it's even more stupid than hunting for hats). I read on the forums that there are many items that were removed although they were legit. Now I don't know if it only affects people who used the idle programm or not, but meh... Sloppy coding by Valve yet again.

And on the topic of being labeled a cheater: you used an external unofficial utility to connect to a fake (i.e. hacked and indeed reverse engineered from a closed system) server to exploit a game system as opposed to its originally intended usage (i.e. playing the damn game). If that's not cheating, it is at least exploiting. Call it what you want, it's just semantics.

Not that I mind idlers, I just don't get the whole outcry now. You wanted stuff that is supposed to be rare and you wanted it all and you wanted it now, so you idled for it - did it occur to you, that once everyone and their mother got a hat, your precious hat won't be that special anymore? And did it occur to you, that what you was going after was a meaningless detail, much like a power level of a weapon and infact not even worth the electricity you've burned while idling for it?

When you really try and remember that it is just meaningless pixels we are arguing about here, everything, including the very idea of "having to idle" or "achieve" anything to get it, seems pretty dumb. Just as dumb as actually doing it on some special maps or fake servers just to work towards that goal specifically. To each their own, though. I just don't see how it entitles you to complain about what Valve did now. Clearly it's Valve's mistake for thinking that adding new content gradually, making it something special, wouldn't fail because everyone will want to have it immideatly, but it's only because people can't handle themselves and actually let those things come naturally. Once we all get everything, we "all will be special, just like everybody else" (I love that figure of speech).

P.S.: The post isn't aimed towards anyone specifically, but I guess everyone will feel adressed by it.

It's not 'just' semantics, there's a heck of a difference between exploiting idling and (say) aimbotting, and being called a cheater is pretty cheap and I don't like it. As others have said, they've had four months to address this, so no surprise if people figured Valve were silently ok with it.

On the hats - sure, everyone knows it's just cosmetic. But it's nice to have them, and the cost of obtaining one by idling is pretty low, so a lot of people would think 'hey, why not'. I don't think anyone here is crying, but Valve have handled this pretty badly.

Wow, what a shitstorm! I'm kind of 50/50 about this (sorry for a couple of smug posts late last night btw): on the one hand I agree that it's shitty to invent a crime and then retrospectivly dish out punishment, I'm sure that if there was a blog update warning people that they will loose their items if the continue idling pretty much everyone would've stopped. At the same time an external, non-Valve programme was being used to gain "1337 pixles" quicker/easier then just playing the game which is also kind of, well, not shitty, but not exactly in the spirit of the thing I guess. I dunno, I think on the whole it was kind of a dickmove on Valve's part for not giving more notice or announcing the fact they considered the idle tool "cheating" sooner to give people an idea that something like this was going to happen.

To those who say there should be a warning.... there was.... in the EULA, and the TOS. They cannot advise specifically on individual apps / hacks etc. E.g. when they released the update, the idle tool hadnt came out yet........


You used a program, and exploited the game.  If you read the EULA from steam, you will find you have broken it I'm sure.

End of the day you have a license to run the game.... NOT OWN IT.  If they code in to remove items that have been gained outside of normal means then they have the right to do it.
