Well the snipers track, I suppose that would be too overpowered. It should just scan some specific angle and if someone happens to cross the laser beam -> PENG

Also @ Tea: You just wait until you read the patch notes on the engi updates. Sniper sentry - Heck yeah!

Why would you care? Didn't realize spies get shot in the head by snipers a lot. Besides, it's not the same as a sniper at all... For it to shoot at it YOU have to get into the same spot at the laser beam. It won't aim at you. No automatic tracking, but better security for specific sectors. And at least you would really have to think where to put this thing, instead of just sticking it in some unexpected places.

I was thinking initially, make it not insta-kill, just unlimited range, but I think that would make the sentry too vulnerable. So I'm thinking lethal in a narrow angle in front of the sentry, but easily flankable and in need of clever placement, cover and teamplay to keep the defence up.

I still think the idea of something where you can aim/fire the sentry remotely with some kind of lazer pointer would be quite cool; spamming choke points, spy checking, scaring your team mates...possibilities are(n't) endless Tongue.

First of all, I'm not only playing spy. As a matter of fact hlstatsx will show you solly as my most played class, steam medic. Actually being shot over and over again by a sniper is one of my top reasons to switch to spy in the first place.

Second, let me explain: I utterly despise snipers. I love how valve put it in the comments: People hate death the most when they didn't see it coming or had no chance to react even if they did, but the very essence of the sniper is to create such a situation. I dislike snipers in all games. I dislike how they can kill you without you being able to retaliate. I dislike the instantkill. I dislike how people play sniper way to much, hurting their own team. I dislike how they don't achieve objectives. Actually, everybody seems to dislike snipers. Makes me wonder why every single game has to have them.
Sure, sure, every game has their special little tweak to put them at a disadvantage: bullet gravity, shot needs to charge etc. But why does every single game have to have it? From futuristic deathmach, over realistic, tactical shooters to comical ones like tf2 every single one has snipers in it.

And yeah, I'm fully aware of the hypocrisy of posting this the day I started playing sniper.

Snipers get rewarded because they have precise aim, every shooter game has a sniper because people enjoy being able to kill people when they aim at someone's head. To be fair, if you dislike people being rewarded for having good aim then you shouldn't be playing an fps game (despite how far away tf2 is from a normal fps game). As nine said, the arguments you set against the sniper could easily be replicated for the spy, and the dh soldier and every random/'skill' crit that ever happened with any class.

Spies have to physically touch you to instantkill you, and all you have to do to negate it is to turn around (ignoring facestabs for the moment). You have the opportunity to defend yourself from a spy, if one gets in the position where he can backstab you it's because you weren't paying attention. With a sniper, all that determines whether or not you die is the sniper's skill, your skill doesn't even enter into the equation. That is why it is more annoying to get killed by a sniper than by any other class imo.

Now I agree with this man! +1

I also find that a good sniper will lock down a map even with a good enemy team. Take TP for example, specifically on some maps the guy made some areas a tactical no go, forcing uber early and stopping teams being able to punch through defences.

And, yes, spot on about why snipers are most annoying!
