Natural evolution suggests TF3 will just be hats. It will move away from FPS to a top trumps style of play.

Well, apart from the visual style (IMHO: 60s Spy-Fi Yay, Particle Effects Boo), I think the tele-sapping solly is going to be a very interesting career path... And I'm curious what other tactical changes these two guns are going to introduce. (Massive choke denial with Mangler burst shot afterburn anyone?)

I don't like tf2 energy either really from a visual standpoint but they've made it match the teleporter and shield and they are stuck with something that doesn't look too good because I imagine the possibilities for teleporter particle effects were pretty limited when the game was first made, if there was a mod for cooler looking shields/lasers i'd get it

Yes yes, we can also sent the spy cloak back to Quake 2. The point was, the guns aren't from TF2 universe. Not even lore-wise. It's just a rocket fallen from the sky to bring you a new badge of third party merchandise.

they are spy-fi and there are giant ray guns on hightower and gravelpit (deadly was insistent on proper naming!) we already won this argument. The sun on a stick and the lava axe thing are fantasy items made of molten lava, they don't fit, rayguns we can work in.

TF2's art style became 'anything goes' a while back. As long as it sticks to the standard of weapons being easily recognisable I really don't care whether pew pew lasers fit a game with other, bigger lasers on a level.

On the bright side, the effects of the charge shot have some weird effects:

Still not totally convinced by the style of the guns....

This is Steampunk and the style they reminded me of:

In terms of 1950-60's sci-fi imagery they more-or-less fit but I wouldn't want to see TF2 turn Steampunk, even though I love Steampunk design, because Steampunk itself exists in it's own Universe just as much as TF2 does theoretically.
(though as pointed out re: hats in particular, artistic integrity/consistency has long flown out of the window in TF2 and yes, those wretched Rift items....sci-fi way easier to work in than fantasy!!!!!!!!!!)

Glad to hear that in use, the guns are perhaps not quite as OP as first appeared.

Anyway, all I can say now is bring on Robbie the Robot Cheesy

I disagree, it's most definitely not Steampunk. Steampunk is mechanical creations, not energy based. This is very much 50s/60s Sci-Fi.

EDIT: Browsing that site, I can see some similarities in the weapons section, but I wouldn't even describe those as Steampunk anyway. Cheesy
