Im in exactly quandry as Teatime, same spec pretty much 8800gt & 1920x1080. Been tempted by 4870 1gb's at about £130 but don't know if I should wait.

It depends on how often you're willing to upgrade and how much money you're willing to spend each time..
The problem with waiting is you'll always be waiting for the next graphics card or motherboard... I like to do it when I'm ready, regardless of whats out there or whats round the corner.. I built my rig just before i7 and I dont regret it.. I would have got something more powerful if I had waited.. but I would have had to wait

My feelings a remarkably similar to Jordans. They only time I'd wait, is if new hardware is imminent. Not because it will change my build choice massively, but because new hardware will sometimes reduce the price off older kit.

Even at £300 for 256GB its steeep!

I could probably easily survive on 128GB , My OS, Apps and all the games I actually play atm only come to ~90GB. Just want the extra legroom to never need to touch anything. All my videos/photos/music gets stored on my server where mechanical drives can play to their strengths.

It's all a matter of perspective really, dropping £100 on a PSU used to be unthinkable, now it's pretty commonplace. Same with High End multi-gpu setups.
For general usage, nothing will do more for your system than an SSD.  They are even a pretty decent upgrade path for old laptops and parents pc's ... just clone the old drive over onto a cheap 64GB drive (can get samsungs for under £95) and it'll run better than new.

Couldnt agree more.

I usually wait for one component that makes sense to buy and build everything at that time.

I built my current rig when the Q6600 dropped in price by bout 50%.  I then proceed to buy everything else regardelss of what was coming out soon etc.
