Being around WDG for a while has made me wonder what the general opinion of competitive tf2 is. Some people seem to despise it for no other reason than the fact it's competitive. Some people seem to despise it because it reduces their notion of how the game is meant to be played (hypocrits). Whilst others regard it with indifference and are simply respectful of the best players and leagues.

But what about you? What's your opinion of the competitive scene (including the game structure)? Most importantly, why do you have this opinion? What reasoning and consideration have you taken in deciding where you stand?

I'm asking this because it's really beginning to irritate me how many people simply refuse to acknowledge Competitive TF2, or even give it some respect. Sure some pubs are great, but the skill level is quite low in comparison to even the lowest division of the European TF2 League. What I just cannot comprehend, is the fact that some people think competitive play somehow limits the game. Wrong. The competitive play, imo, is the only structure which unlocks TF2 from classes and their counter classes. The most complex and skillful play happens on the competitive scene and it makes me rage how ignorant people are of their skill level and understanding of the game.

Not everyone is like that though and I felt WDG was a good place to ask, as for a pub the skill level is quite high. So, where do you stand?

I think that competitive TF2 is a completely different game. in general I play for fun (although that's being lost) I do find I get annoyed when I'm not towards the top though (which is odd, because I often play with players I consider "above my level".)

I don't have any problems with it, but I'm also not really familiar with it either.

You're entitled to your opinion mate, but you need to understand why WDG was formed. We're not anti-competition, but anti "attitude" that goes with some of those players who think they're god. We decided that we'd not have a competitive side for many reasons. Some of us came from competitive clans and saw them break apart for reasons relating to match play and training (despite having good players in the team as well).

Respect is earned. If a leet player comes here and conducts themselves well (as many do) then they get my respect.

Competition can bring the leet attitude, which has low tolerance for new players and people making mistakes. There is the assumption that because a player is good they expect everyone else to be just as good and hold them to that standard. We're just more laid back tbh.

I'm not saying that all match / competition players are like this. But sadly, there are more than a few out there!

I definitely think there are some really good players in WDG and if they trained (which I understand you don't really want to do, and I'm not suggesting you start) could easily give any of the major UK clans a good showdown.

Meh.

WDG plays some games in the competitive style (6 men teams, class limits, usually CP maps), they're fun, just another aspect of TF2. I doubt I'd have enough time compared to pro players to make any inroads on a clan, in any case.

Nothing to go on about, so yeah, meh.

A very good topic indeed.

For me, competitive play is really good fun when it goes well, and extremely frustrating when it doesn't. In a public game, you can still have a laugh when you're being steamrolled back to your base with your randomly assigned team (or even call a vote scramble), but in competitive play, it's much harder to accept defeat. When you play as a preset team (in BFM's case, in a clan) there is much more emphasis put on winning, which can detract from the fun. Basically, I'm saying that if you're being slapped all over the place, it sucks harder than usual.

Having said that, the best TF2 I've ever played has been in 6v6 matches against other clans. When you get a matching against a squad with a similar skill level to your own, it can make for a really fantastic game, and it's like playing TF2 the way it was designed to be played. Even when on the losing side of this, it's still far more fun and satisfying than any public play can be, in terms of actually seeing the intricacies of certain forms of play.
It's much better when you can see an enemy team's well-constructed tactic working, as opposed to just losing in a straight fight. I don't know, it's difficult to explain but in match conditions, I find the whole thing more fulfilling.

The main interesting thing for me is how the classes are used differently, twin soldiers with medic generally being the core of the team, with scouts and a demoman to attack and defend. We played one match with an experienced captain (Lewis) which was great, because everyone was clear exactly what their job was, where they should be, where the rest of the team are, etc. We've never had that kind of clarity in a public game. It's the dynamic of a 'caller' that public play kind of lacks.

Our experience as a clan is limited, having played a total of about 15 matches, all of them friendly games, and winning about a third of those. As you may or may not know, BFM is a clan of real life friends, so it's... interesting when you're trying to play as a team with a leader calling the shots. Sometimes this can lead to people falling out, so it would be interesting to play in a competitive game where this isn't the case, to see how people respond when they don't 'know' their team mates.

You're right about the Skill Level thing, though. I mean, WDG has a lot of extremely talented members and regulars, but on an individual level, they can't hold a torch to some of the members of league teams we've played, not because of lack of aim or movement skills or anything like that, but because the competitive guys know the game incredibly well.

I guess competitive play isn't for some people (it turns out it's not particularly for BFM). It's down to personal preference. I love our grudge matches against WDG, HAM and SAC, but when it gets to league team sort of play I guess we didn't have the co-ordination as a team to pull off good enough play. I'd love to carry on playing competitive matches, but the other problem is that the Spy isn't as well-suited to competitive play as a most other classes, and it's the only one I can really excel at.

It only gets awesome when you play with the same people for a long time. I know the majority of my clan for almost a year now and we played over 200 (never counted it but we have quite a few) matches.

I don't have any problem with comp play or players (it's a good thing for TF2!), but it is a different game. For me playing 6v6 is more like 'work' than fun sometimes, and really to get good requires training, consistency, and so on... and I'm not that skilled and not that bothered!

Having said that, seeing as how comp play only uses a few of the classes (until the patch, anyway), I'm not convinced there's as much depth there as some might say. I think it's more to do with tactics, strategy and roles than 'skills'. Take some average pub players, get one to soldier, one to medic, and a scout to try and pick their medic, and you can turn a game around quite easily.

Agree with the hard work.

Also agree about tactics playing an important part but there is a lot more skill to it than you first think. :-

Players like this can quickly turn a game round.  There a player on NuB (cant remember name shazam or somat) who is an exceptional scout.  I've seen a team wiping the floor with him in it, he swapped sides and then the other team magically started wiping the floor back...

I have no interest in competetive TF2 for me , but I do understand why for others there is. I don't despise it, just not bothered and even if I was, I don't have the time to invest for it to be worthwhile. As J mentions in his post some of us have seen this cause trouble amongst the troops and that's the main reason I'm not bothered about being involved in anything like that. I play TF2 for a laugh and like to play in good company (that's you lot btw!) not spend my time trawling through firing points on maps and running through "what ifs" errrrrgh nightmare! Smiley

That'll be Shintaz from idk, one of the top European teams. Theres a couple of them that are on NuB quite alot and they're all top, top players like you said.

Comp play didn't really hold much interest for me until recently, its something that I haven't had that much experience in and would like to get a bit more to see what its like to be honest. The few 6v6 matches that I've played in have always been really close run games; like other people have said, good fun but really hard work.

As for the players, you're always going to get arrogant arseholes, be it on pubs or in pugs/matches, its part of being on the internet. Not much you can do about it except ignore it, let them get on with playing their game and continue playing yours.

I oringally played tf2 because it was first game for me which had decent gibing. (ye i know unreal done ok but this is insane). So much fun watching people ebing blowed up or just falling on the floor after a headshot. But it so annoying when you cant head shot a thing or hit anything with a rocket (pipe). FOr me it is a bit of both. I love laid back games where you can just go pyro and mouse 1+w. To cause havoc. on other hand I love the spy whos class requires a hellalot of skill as do all classes but the spy is just so strategic and is all about timing which I love in a game.

Competitive wise I always aim to win in what I do. TF2 is a game but like all games I like to be good at it. Same as final fantasy or fooball manager. It is very frustrating if you have a rubbish piece of armor or a rubbish player in a position. Kinda like tf2 it is annoying but its just a thing you expect so you live with it. Nurture them. and eventually ebfore you know it they are top of the leaderboard or best player in your team who kills everything. I think tf2 there is a base skill level but it is more experiance. The more you play at a high standard the better you will become just like life Smiley
