My advise - don't spend more than £500, get a small engine hatchback without alloys (extra insurance + you will scuff them), 3rd party is all you need, and most importantly drive like your instructor was in the car - have an accident or get a speeding fine and Insurance companies will quite happily rape your premiums for the next 5 years.

I've had a couple of small accidents, a break-in, and a speeding fine (fucking unmanned motorway roadworks) when i started driving and it's probably cost me somewhere in the region of £3000 so far in bumped up premiums over the past 5 years.


Oh, and for buying the car, if you or any of your mates know someone who's good with cars, see if you can get them to come along with you when you go to see one.

There's also a checklist on the internet from the AA or the RAC that you can print off to take with you for things to check on the car.

Also - try and take it for a test drive if you can...that way you can get the feel for it - and also check it runs OK etc. One thing I was told to check for was that the mile counter goes up - if it doesn't it means someone has tried to change the value to make it seem like it's done lower mileage.

If you have no NCB you're restricted to small engines, think small and light, Fiat Cinquecentos are fun to drive you can thrash the crap out of them and you could probably get 3 of them for £1k and sell them on for a profit if you fail to break them.  Also try a Ford Ka or Ford Fiesta with the 1.25 engine.  Don't buy a Nova, Corsa, Peugeot 306 or any Rover with a K series engine.

Always pay for the legal protection with your insurance and it might be worth going with a local broker.  TPF&T seems almost as cheap as 3rd party.

Edit: Haven't recommended VW as they seem a tad overvalued.  Well designed cars though.

My advice would be to buy a car you like, in your price range, with the lowest mileage, and as young as poss, and make sure you test drive it....  For a grand i dont think body work etc are gonna be top priority so just make sure it works, and do the checks against it FSH and receipts are a good indicator.

Agree with Rippy n watch your back if going private / small dodgy independant dealer (Frank Butchers old place lol)

Just remember any car can have any problem at any time, so as long as its one you like it wont piss you off that much.
