Does this thing make any difference to connecting your modem directly to the socket on your master socket?

According to the BT website it only makes any difference if you have multiple sockets in your house + you have a master socket in your house.

I was thinking that. I often unscrew the port and plug the router directly into the thing in the wall when I'm at my parents, the internet seems to be about a trillion times better.

I got an iplate last week at my parents (not with bt, so paid £6 for it) - they were fed up with not being able to use the phone extensions when i had it plugged into the test socket.

They're only on 2Mb, but it improved my noise margin from 10 to 13db, which i believe means we could get up to 3.5Mb if we wanted, instead of the previous max of 2. something.

When i go back to sheffield i'm going to see about getting 50Mb cable Cheesy - Prices for that come down on the first of September.

My router is connected indirectly by an extension lead from the socket. But it is the master socket, so I don't know whether u'd see improvement by fitting it to a subsiduary elsewhere in the house.

Plugging directly into the master socket can sometimes be an advantage.

In essance, the longer the run of copper. Then the greater the signal degregation. Also, a wire running through your house may be prone to picking up interfirance (cross talk and the such). Additionaly any join is a potental week spot that can weaken the signal.

From the hazy recolection I currently have of a training session I had with work about a year ago, it comes down to frequency. Original dial up ran in the same frequency range as speach and sound. A very constricted band of frequencies, hence "Narrow band". Doing clever things to the line to allow it to carry a greater range of frequencies (Broad Band), hence faster speeds. The micro filter efectivly screens low frequencies off to the phone, and diverts the high frequencies off to the RJ11 socket for your modem/router or what ever it is you have.

So if you live a long way from the exchange, your signal is gonna be weaker than when it left. Oh and I nearly forgot. BT opperate a 50 to 1 policy. So your connection is shared with 49 other users. Hence why I'm seeing a reduced speed where I am as all the kiddies are off school and on-line more.

In short for us ADSL customers, plug your kit in to the master socket for preferance.

And to hijack things slightly. BT are rolling out a fiber optic network over the next 3 to 4 years...

http://www.top10-broadband.co.uk/news/2008/01/bt_begins_laying_fibre_optic_broadband_network/

But befor you get all giddy and excited. It would appear that BT are initaly only putting this network into new builds first. Then, just like the bad old days of the BT Broadband register, they will then roll it out into the existing infastructure on a demand level basis. So the big cities and towns will scrabble for it, and those of you that live in the beauifull and isolated, but technolgical sparce wastelands, will have to hope and prey that enough of you want the faster speeds. Hopefully BT will then look upon you and wonder if they can get enough profit out of you all to warent doing the work.

Isn't the internet fun!

Well wasn't it BT's plan to implement fibre optic 20 years ago or something? But they were told they couldn't.

BS I tell thee. Other countries are getting like a BIZILLIOOOOOON meg and people in the sticks still struggle to get 0.5 meg.

There's only one solution. Fetch me a lorry, we're off to steal Kent.
