I'm not sure if this is old news to some of you.

BT have come up with a gadget for the main phone socket that is supposed to improove your borandband connection. I think Papa & HeX already have this. It's the BT Broadband Accelerator. It looks like an improoved micro filter.

It's free for BT customers, although you have to pay £1.20 for the postage. Non-BT customers can buy it from the BT on-line store (sorry - I didn't find out the price).

Interested?

http://www.productsandservices.bt.com/consumerProducts/displayTopic.do?topicId=25075&s_cid=btb_FURL_accelerator

I've put in an order for me, so I'll let you know if it makes any improovment once I've got my hands on it and plugged it in.

Keep grinning.

I'm a bit sceptical but the reviews look good. Unfortunately I have an ancient phone setup and not a decent master socket, so I can't use it. Wonder if there are third party booster versions?

I bought what they called an I-Plate when I started off on BT. It has improved my connection considerably. My network out here in the sticks is old and said to be no better than 1.5MB line. I get 2.5MB with the I-Plate. It was only 1MB when I didn't have it and was with Pipex.

slightly off this topic. I was going to try my hardest to get out of my BT contract.. anybody got any advice for this?
Also, I was looking at Pipex myself Cheesy
BT say my line can do 6.5meg and Pipex say they can get up to 20meg Cheesy

Im guessing this is something to do with allocations at our exchange but I'm not sure.. what do you guys think?

(if you think this should be a seperate thread.. do it)

No, the way this works, like with BeThere, O2 and Sky's free broadband (ADSL2+) is that the broadband company has installed their own hardware into your exchange (I think it's called LLU unbundling or something) and they can then offer you faster broadband. It takes longer to set-up as a BT engineer has to go and switch your Broadband (NOT your phoneline, your phoneline stays the same) onto the ISP's equipment.

For the last couple of years in Sheffield I was with Be* and we got about 16 meg down and 1.5/2.5meg up.

If you are interested in going with Be* - PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let me know - cos then I can "refer" you and I'm sure that will mean we both get something in return Cheesy I was pretty pleased with them, I'm going to be going back to them when we move into our new house.

Is this to do with the switch of provider or the new filter?

I'm sceptical. I'm not saying it won't work, but I'd like to see some unbiased evidence.

I wasn't saying yours was, but it's not exactly an in-depth study, and also the change in network provider means you have no control. (I meant I'd like to see a good article, not written by BT themselves).

Sorry, it's because I can't do the "<hr>" tag to insert a break. (I was hoping the line break would do).

All I can tell u is my line is rated at 1.5 meg. I was getting a 1 meg service from Pipex. I changed to BT AND installed the I-Plate and my service is now 2.5 meg on the same line. For the sake of the £12 I paid for it, worth a gamble to get a 1.5 meg improvement in service.

You see I think that the change in ISP may have affected the connection, possibly as well as, the new filter.

Still a BT line though, and I've gone through several providers without much difference in line speeds (not 1.5 mb worth, anyway). Seems the 'filter' puts a choke on the ring line, so I might try that and see if it helps.

Does this thing make any difference to connecting your modem directly to the socket on your master socket?

According to the BT website it only makes any difference if you have multiple sockets in your house + you have a master socket in your house.
