There was some discussion last night on the server with respect to these two mean pieces of ordinance. My esteemed colleague (and notorious bastard) Cruelcow posits that the Ambassador is "Hella decrepit" and "Lackadaisical intensis." And that the vanilla revolver is "Mega sweet," and "Tough tuna."

Now, whilst I don't think the Ambassador is a straight upgrade, I think it is a valid alternative to the revolver and though I don't particularly enjoy facing down pyros with it, I think it does have its uses and encourages a different style of play where instead of being a get away gun, it can be used more proactively.

One situation that the Ambassador is nice in, for example, is headshotting engies who are dozing away, sometimes it can be pretty hard to backstab a switched on and aware engy, but if you are a distance, a lot of the time you will not be noticed. You can also sometimes plant a headshot on a heavy who is shooting one of your friends and would notice you running behind him, you may not kill him but 110 damage is a decent wedge of his health and applied instantly it may help kill him even if he has a medic.

I would also highlight the fact that as far as I can tell, at its least accurate, the Ambassador is as accurate as the revolver is all the time. This variation in accuracy suggests, at least to me, that the Ambassador has a slightly higher skill ceiling than the standard revolver, and it is this perceived depth that attracts me to the weapon.

So, to summarise, I don't think the Ambassador is all bad and I welcome the variation in play style that it presents. I think it is like the Dead Ringer in this respect. If you try to use the Dead Ringer like a normal spy watch (Cloak to infiltrate, disguise, backstab, exfiltrate) then you find it is just a 7 second cloak with an annoying decloak sound, but if used slightly differently (Disguise to infiltrate, backstab, fake death, disguise, try again) then it is far more rewarding.

I rather like the Ambassador personally; looks and crit headshots are lully, but I'm not an expert spy. Maybe if I played it more often my opinion would be more refined.

I think that Ambassador is a fine examle of how should all unlock look like, because it adds an alternative to play style and not just an upgrade which would everyone use.

I use the Revolver because in most situations i just dont have time to aim on head and the increasing/decreasing crosshair is annoying.

Maybe it's only on my side, but since valve changed the way it works, I can't hit heads anymore with the ambassador even if the target stand still, independent of the range and don't get me started on moving targets!

Works fine as an upgrade/alternative from my experience of being shot by it. The accuracy is the same, the main thing is if you don't cooldown you don't get another headshot. Therefore, it is fine to shoot a headshot then spam to take down the last bit of health, but otherwise the normal revolver works better in "general combat" if the spy must use it at all.

I'm a crap spy though, heh, so from that perspective I've no idea which I prefer, although I've got the ambassador equipped and randomly dabble trying the class now and again.
