We have 7 PCs (Edit, actually 9 PCs) at of varying degrees of obsolescence on a network that was originality set up for 2 PCs.  We have been using a local company called Up and Running that, in my view have not done a proper job, probably due to my boss not knowing anything about PCs and unwilling to listen to anyone.

He has now concluded that he needs to throw some money at the network and I'm wondering if anyone knows of any decent company in the NE Kent area that can do a review of the system, make an easily understandable report of what needs doing at a reasonable price.

I work for MET (manged enterprise technologies - www.met.co.uk) and we excel in small to medium sized business solutions, but also work with enterprise class customers.

We work country wide (international on occasion too)

Check us out at the linky above.

Had a meeting with a local specialist today, seemed to know what he was talking about (ie. he confirmed what you lot said), his hourly rate (£35) and daily rate (£250) didn't seem too extortionate either.  It's just the software costs that's going to be a killer, waiting on email at the moment.

Server hardware does look steep tbh..... maybe a cheaper backup option to start with (hell, two large external hard drives would be cheaper!).

Server Software cost is as per expectation (naturally high). You'd be hard pressed to get a cheaper 32 bit O/S for much less than the 64 bit version (Small Business Server).

I think the 6 Vista upgrades for workstations also look steep as well.... Windows Server 2008 can work with XP clients, so fail to see why this is needed entirely tbh.

UPS - always good to have, but is this server business critical to the point where you'd need it in a power cut? Most USP just buy you extra time to shut down gracefully etc

I'm in the wrong game. Six and a half grand? Do you realy need all that stuff? Agree with Junta, the Vista upgread is a waist of time. Xp will be just fine. I'm sure there are plenty of free firewall and anti-virus software packages out there. Doesn't Xp and vista have their own fire walls?

Agreed with John - suspect it's a high initial pitch and you could chop a fair bit off with the workstation licensing/etc.

The problem we have is that most of the PCs are running XP Home, Vista Basic or have no licence.  It is also a Windows 7 upgrade, as this will be the last money spent on the PC system for a loooong time I feel it would be worth it.

My main issue is with paying nearly £1500 for a server when I can build a very similar system for £300 minus the hot swappable hard drives.  What is the difference between a server system and a normal system?

I'd also want to upgrade all the desktops to 2Gb RAM

Nothing. The only thing that makes it a server is the additional software on it to perform services (hence it being a server).

Im sure if you ran it as a linux server - it would be a lot cheaper. You'd still get the appropriate fileserver stuff you'd need, and you can run a mailserver on it easily enough (although not push-exchange as far as I'm aware). It would be harder to maintain though unless you have someone who is experienced at linux.

I'd add that server class machines will generally have ECC memory, higher reliability, hotswap/etc (and more importantly, if you use something cheap and nasty and it goes wrong, everyone will rightly yell at you). There is a markup for having something a bit classier, but I'm not sure I'd be happy hosting anything important on a 300 quid bargain box.

As deadly stated, any machine can be a 'server' with the right software.

As for hardware differences, server machines can have hot swappable hard drives, drives extra networking connections, back-up hardware (tape drive or removable media) not to mention support for upgrades (i.e. a good amount of room to add stuff). They can also use registered memory (i.e. parity) for error checking and can also support multiple processor packages. These machines also tend to support remote access / network administration.

If you're saying that your server needs to last a long time, then the cheaper "I could get a £300 PC" option is also missing the point. You'd be better getting the fastest server for your budget.

*also agree strongly with Claws' comments about servers. You get what you pay for. If this were completely a budget exercise, then by all means get a £300 server and make do. However, if it must last a "long while" that £300 PC will get old real fast.

best analogy I can find for this-
Go out and buy some cheapo batteries (you know the ones you find at the market.. 4 for £1) and spend £5 on them
get your stopwatch out and time how long they last in something like a digital camera..
then go and spend the same amount of money on a few duracells and theyll last you twice as long.. you wont get as many batteries for the money, but overall youll get more life.
So long term, itll be better value for money which is what your after here.
I suggest 2 cases on a rack system. 1 to house the mobo/cpu/ram ect and 1 to house some hot swap drives. will cost a bit but itll save time/money in the long term Smiley
