There was a post on the OCUK forum about it not that long ago; said the same thing basically. It doesn't run as cool as decent thermal paste, but toothepaste and tipex can do a job.

Everything conducts heat - just to a different level. The idea of thermal paste is to fill the microscopic gaps between the heatsink and the CPU with something that's as conductive as possible to transfer the heat between the two. Anything with a thermal conductivity better than air will be better than no thermal paste.

Anything will work - you could use jam if you wanted to (I have no idea if jam is more thermally conductive than air), or use nothing at all but I certainly wouldn't recommend it. Stop being stingy and spend £3-5 on some proper thermal paste.

One reason not to use tipex is that as soon as it dries, if you nudge/move your heatsink at all it will flake/crack and it won't work as well anymore.

Basically...USE THERMAL PASTE.

and if it doesn't work too well you could toast some bread on the top and have a ready supply of jam at your hands (in your computer)

I have no idea if jam is more thermally conductive than air.

Although a google search brought nothing. A quick work around with some assumptions suggests that Jam is better at conducting heat than air is. The best value I could get you is around the 25-75 W/(m-k) mark, although that value is only taking into account the minerals within Jam whose TC is very easy to find. A majority of Jam, according to Wolfram Alpha, is cholesterol and sugar which is either too hard to find or, in the case of the latter, too complex and the term is quite vague as it covers a lot of different types of sugars in various forms.

Although, considering the thermal conductivity of air is around the 25-26 mW/(m-k) (0.0025-0.0026 W/(m-k)) is quite relatively small, a majority of materials in paste form would do a better job of conducting heat - especially bacon!
