How long would a 8600GT last me? At the moment I'm using this "built-in" piece of shizz card thats in the motherboard. ATI X1250 it is, which sucks complete ass.
I'm looking to spend no more then roughly, £40?

This little badboy would be a better option for that kinda cash... its the latest GPU from ATI but with lower grade ram and clocked low. It should get you decent frame rates at half decent settings

If your PSU has a 6pin PCIex extention thing, get a second hand 8800gt of ebay.
They normally go for around £40, and will run most things at 1680x1050 or below at high settings.
Edit: will run on molex adapter if you don't overclock.
I use mine for TF2 at 1920x1080 and only need to lower the AA.

I have an ATI 3850 for sale, PCIExpress.... 512mb and I will part with it for a sensible offer lower than the amount you are looking to spend! More powerful than the card Chaos is recommending Requires 1 6pin PCI express power connector (or a 4 pin molex power lead with a 6 pin adaptor). Triplex made the card - huge fan on it (reasonably quiet). PM me if interested? Example review http://www.itreviews.co.uk/hardware/h1530.htm

I have the same card Junta is offering, definitely your best bet I unless you want to spend a week on ebay searching for that elusive bargain (they are there if you are willing to take a risk and you know your graphics cards).
As a rule of thumb
Ati Anything before the 3 series is pretty crap go for 3850/3870 second hand (if you can find them) 4 series new, try for 48_ _ series
Geforce 8600 as a bare minimum (Ati 3850 far better) 8800, loads of hugely differently performing models with very little difference in name

Thanks for the offer but I really can't be bothered to spend even more money just to upgrade to a 6pin power supply. cuz i'm a hobo innit.
I'll most likely get the card Chaos is on about. It has things like Pixel Shader 3.0, DX10 support etc.? I'm not the most tech savvy person around as you might tell. I know having a big video memory capacity is good though :]

A 4 pin to 6 pin converter costs a couple of quid.. I'll throw one in if I can find one! The 3850 has DX10.1 as well.

Yeah I have a spare if needed, also for future reference this chart gives an idea of graphics card power http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/radeon-geforce-price,2323-6.htmlany of the cards mentioned would be a big upgrade, so they would all be decent choices.

If you can find an extra £25 you can get a new Ati 4830 512mb which is an awesome card and stupidly cheap.

I've got my heart set on the 8600GT, found quite a few on ebay for £35ish.
But thanks for the offers/help anyway!

I still play on 800x600 with a X600! Can't be arsed swapping vid cables over to my new rig most of the time. Did mean to get a monitor with dual inputs but never got round to it
