Company of Heroes: Tales of Valor (+alternative rts game modes)
«

Just a quick post about this game; well, small expansion. I'd suggest not getting this full price (get it dead cheap or in a compilation, it's really expensive IMO for the content offered even with the level of polish), but it does have some neat additions apart from 3 (2 easy, 1 hard - since I've not finished it yet) mini campaigns (3 maps apiece).
I wish more RTS games had it, but it does include "Defend against waves", "DotA-like assault" and "Tank battles". Pretty fun stuff, although the assault missions are horribly balanced, and there is only 1 map for each of the defend/assault modes (tank battles get 2 maps).
Anyway, it's interesting being able to take control of a single unit (assault / tank battles) even though the AI of them sometimes interfere with your plans a little. The defending is somewhat a standard affair in mods (in fact CoH has a brilliant multiplayer mission mod that is good for this already), but it's pretty polished here with 4 players working together - and I've had my fair share of utter defeats, close victories, cheesy wins and utter glorious victories - depending more on my team mates, since I'm about average (so if they're bad, we lose, if they're good, we win!).
A shame not as many RTS games concentrate on alternative game modes (Empire: Total War thankfully has sieges and pitched battles for instance, all pitched battles would get boring quick!). I actually don't fully like the standard CoH 1v1 games, but these are a refreshing change. Must be why I'm not playing as many RTS games nowadays, haha.

I bought it too, but haven't played it really.
The new units aren't good alternatives for the old ones.
Did not try the mods.
Only play normal skirmishes online sometimes.
It's a brilliant RTS game with a lot of tactical possibilities, but to be succesful you have to play it a lot....

That's right. I also enjoy playing the British (tally ho!) which is a pretty tough one to win as.
The alternatives I've not even played with BTW, although some are weird changes and I've already disabled them, even though I've not started a skirmish yet
(I'll check out the stats and utility of them sometime I guess).

COH is a great game but i don't have tales of valor because of the reason you spoke about final. Its too expensive for not much more. If it was 2 completly new factions with long campaigns then yes it would be like opposing fronts but its really just relic playing around testing stuff out.
I personally love 1vs1 because of the intensity and strategies at work. 1vs1 don't tend to be as epic as 2vs2 because most games are either won or lost early on with little chance of recovery. I proberbly play 1vs1 more because i am terrible at 2vs2 at the momment, i can't get the synergy between factions working i just play like i would 1vs1 but now i have a partner.
Brits are really good fun and i am one of those brit players who only places 1 or 2 emplacements max in a game. I do hate the fact the brits have no anti tank early which makes it a nail bitter early game as you try so hard to hold off tanks. i find motor placement more often than not wins me the game. Not only does it send the other guy into "must destroy motor" mode it defeats the t2 defensive strat that so many Wehr use.
Theres my two ticks on COH. Oh the kangaroo is stupidly powerful but i guess thats because i have been on the wrong end of it every time!

I'd be up for team games, but no to 1v1 testing deadly/Fisted
problem is, since I can't even finish the campaign, I'm pretty seriously out of practice. Getting the hang of the basics again through the defensive online map though.
British placement of their motors is paramount. Team games are fun with them, they do really well capping the few fuel or munitions to pump them out while your team mate does the other caps. 2v2 is probably the most fun if you have a friend (automatch or otherwise), even if you lose.

CoH is probably the best RTS game I've ever played, personally.
Also, the British are quite hard to use at first. However as Finaldeath said, its all about placement with them, particularly due to the fact that their AT guns are all immobile. If you place them well, they are devestating.
I suppose one good example would be the use of churchills as a form of ''meatshield'' for the firepower of the sherman fireflies, due to their lack of armour.

yeah i bought this recently and like all of you i'm hugley disappointed that for what i paid, there's very little game. i'm also like deadly and have never played a RTS online, mainly because when i do skirmishes i like to play at my own speed which means, build the biggest army possible and then wipe the enemy out in 1 swoop

I can do so, perhaps Wednesday or Thursday or the weekend, can't do Friday though. Give us a shout on steam.
I like the compatibility aspect - which is one reason, I suspect, it's priced highly by THQ - it essentially is a standalone expansion, and if you're not into the campaigns (which are okay, but some are not as good as others) it'd be a good enough purchase for the multiplayer and bits and pieces.
I also do play the normal Germans too, I like their tanks and general force compared to the allies. However, not as fun as the British.

Well we could have HAM vs WDG thing going in COH. I play with Egg and chips in 2vs2 as the Wehr while he is the pe we are geting ok now. nearly got the Wins per loss up to 1 because at the start we got nailed by everyone.

I am up for that! Also i like the Wehr in 2vs2 because of the support options and then the late game tanks. I also agree that the brits are the most fun because there is nothing beter than smashing their base with 25pounders or landing a glider behind enemy lines and taking out squad after squad with the commandos. The only problem is the british are really immobile so don't think you will the first ones geting to berlin!

Can't do thursday because of the match - unless it's during the day or something.
Wednesday might be no good as it's pound a pint night at the local.
Not sure about the weekend yet - I know I'm going to be doing something - but not sure when/what.
