Windows 7 current RC is getting rave reviews and it's effectively free for another year. I'd go that way on a new build. Vista still irritates me even now.
I have windows 7 RC for like 5 weeks now and never had a problem with it. Its worth a full functional OS. And yeah, as you mentioned its free till july 2010.

More or less. Shutdown after 1 hour after march 2010. Still good enough to wait for a decent price. I will most likely use the voucher offer (postponed to July 15th). I avoided Vista, but 7 appears to be worth purchasing. Also this will be probably be my step switching to 64bit.

With the way things are shaping up, I'm very tempted by Win7. I think I'll be setting aside some money for a 64 bit licence and a new hard drive. That way if I find I just can't get on with it, chalk it up to experiance and slot in the old faithfull XP drive. The future is looking interesting

The future is looking interesting like with vista, you can get the x86 version and then apply for the x64 version later and get the disc for postage from the US (which is about £5ish) Thats what I did with my Vista Home Premium

Installed Win 7 and although it's early days, thus far I'm impressed.

So, would you guys call Win7RC1 save to use? Also, I assume it's possible to make a parallel install to XP?

I installed it on my laptop - running parallel with Windows XP, so yes - it is *safe* to use Obviously you might have some small issues - but I'd say it's pretty well rounded

I gotta say, that although I plan on using W7, surely it cant be that stable right now. Most MS products are normally pretty bad for the first six months, then get patched up to decent ness.
Is it really decent enough even in its pre release state? More stable than just running XP?

Win 7 seems ok, except for repeated Windows Explorer crashes (restarts itself, crashes). No event log errors either (which is a suprise!)

Well, I'll still hold off because I just can't be bothered to erase my xp partition and install all my steam games again.
Does anyone else find it deeply deeply ironic that the backup facility provided with steam seems to take about as long as just downloading the games again?
