Just thought i would share a problem which reared its ugly head again last night. But no problem will get in the way of TF2 and me so i solved it. Now dust is a nasty little bugger when it gets into your pc, causing havok all over the place. Now the problem i had before i solved it last night was this: My CPU core temps were...... 80 degrees! (Game load) so i checked my pc and what do you know undernearth my fan, on top of the cooling vanes was a layer of finly compact dust which had collected there for nearly 2 years. Obviously i got to work removing it but once it was gone i checked the tempereatures 40 degrees (Game load). Thats half as much as before, no wonder my pc was playing up and i was geting the dreaded Deffered Procedure Calls (DPC) during games! At least i figured it out before impulse buying

I probably need to give mine a bit of a clean, it's been a few months since I built it now. I'm going to try an experiment: I was wondering if I can link the wifes mouth up to some kind of hose and use her non-stop nagging to blow the dust away instead of a can of compressed air. I'll post the results.

Lots of little utilities you can use to read CPU temp etc.
Core Temp RealTemp Everest Ultimate (shows a *lot* of information about your computer) Speed Fan does it too I think

An alternative method would be to remove the fan/heatsink and place your tongue on the processor for approx 20 seconds. Then you can use a standard medical thermometer (available from most chemists) to measure the temperature of your tongue. Add a 5% offset to allow for the bodys emergency cooling effect. This negates the requirement for specialist sensor equipment/software.
Don't forget to re-attach the heat sink!

Real temp is probs the best option for most people.. Its the most accurate Freebie
Everest is what I use though but it costs money! I like it because it has a Vista sidebar gadget which is handy

It's in the settings for everest, you enable it there and then it's added to the list of installed gadgets. You have to have everest running for it to show the info in the sidebar.

I have heard that riva tuner does it? Everest also tells you the GPU temps (but I don't think all are available in the trial version) i.e. what prometheus said!

meh, i've been running 80 degrees game load on my GPU for well over a year now, its still living! the card fan always runs at a rubbish 25% unless i turn it up with rivatuner and the case fans all stay at 30% until i turn them up with speedfan. then the bugger is happy and cool, but loud as hell. i canne win
