Anyone like me with a current iphone excited/interested about the new and rumoured features coming to the firmware upgrade and also new handset?

i've been following it quite avidly as i have chosen to program an app for my dissertation and hoping some of the new APIs will be useful to me.

Anyone else programming or considering programming for the iPhone? what have you done/what are you gonna do?

it's the WWDC next week so guessing the firmware update will come around then and the new handset maybe a month later.

Yup! *raises hand* In particular about the inclusion of CalDAV since I do all my calendaring on my own server, and I'd love to make changes to that over the air. (I know I could cook up an ActiveSync <-> CalDAV translator, but who needs that anyway now.)
Second is the permission to use Location API. I'm getting TomTom as soon as it comes out -- proper turn-by-turn navigation is in my opinion what set the iPhone back up to now. Also Video and Voice recording might be nifty.

Considering, yes. So far I've bought a book on Cocoa since it'll be my first ObjC proogie. Oh, and I've gotten the chair to include me in the Edu iPhone Dev thingie.

Only thing I want for my iPhone is flash player intergrated into the iPhone safari browser.. I hate not being able to watch weebl stuff on my iPhone..
I know adobe are doing it.. just dont know when (havnt been keeping track really)

Other than that.. it plays music, it has speakerphone, it makes calls and it has good 3g internet access..
and unless someone makes it so I can use my free internet on my iPhone through my macbook.. im not interested in anything else really

@root : i have a couple of iPhone dev books in pdf form if you want them.

proper turn-by-turn navigation is in my opinion what set the iPhone back up to now

yeah should be good, although is currently available in the form of xGPS on jailbroken phones it's not ideal as you have to be constantly downloading google maps via 3g.

Video recording is rumoured but not confirmed, again already available on JB so tis possible.

i'm looking forward to combining embeded google maps, access to the onboard ipod library(though not sure what level of access that'll be i.e. just simple playback or will i be able to mess with samples and perform DSP etc on it) and the possibility of a compass on the new model to create a soundcape app which users can physically explore.

@chaos : flash would be a big plus. there is strong evidence towards ability to tether to laptops via both bluetooth and usb to use internet connection in 3.0, someone basically stumbled upon it in the beta testing and again is possible right now on JB phones only prob is wether the carriers will alow it.

ok incase you haven't stumbled upon it already chaos you will be able to tether in 3.0 but the cost from o2 is a lovely bolt on at like £15 a month for 3gb, not worth it imo. though if your willing to JB it you can get a program called "modem" and pay a one of fee of $10 and just use that.

From friends who have tried out the leaked 3.0 GM seed it aint a massive step up just a few nice twaeks but i believe the real fun will start with all the new apps that'll come out of the firmware update

Personally, I'm waiting for a decent google phone to come out, maybe the HTC Magic - it seems to check all the right boxes.
Priorities for me are Web Browsing, GPS, and Email/PDA organising. I'd get a blackberry if they wern't such a rip-off contracts wise (£20/month is my max spend, including at least a gig of bandwidth and a sensible amount of texts/minutes).

Might pick up something shiney in Singapore on my way back from Aus, will have to see what compatability is like with uk networks.

I got my iPhone on payg, and they gave me unlimited 3g interwebs for free for the 1st yea, after that, the bolton is just £5pm by Direct Debit, If I can get flash on it (Im talking fully functioning flash) Ill pay, otherwise I CBA!
I have a satnav, so Im good without that on my phone (also, setting it up in the car is a pain)
Im not interested in the email on it, although I do like having the names/addresses/emails as well as phone numbers come up with it (makes putting details into my satnav easier)

I've got a proper Sat Nav (£50 navigo with the Tom-Tom software ) , just like having gps google maps in my pocket for walking/cycling directions, I quite enjoyed it when i had a blackberry.

I'm quite interested in the nVidia tegra devices, hopefully there will be a proper phone based on it as well as MID's - it does hardware flash acceleration.

Flash is a terrible horrible cpu hog and I wish the internet wasn't so in love with it - It was half the reason i had to upgrade my laptop - I could playback 720p MKV's fine, but had to switch computers to watch anything more strenuous than SD youtube.

I want to blend every web designer who thought it would be a good idea to make websites entirely in flash. Goddamn i hate them.

Dynamic vectors require a LOT of maths..
There are actually better animation solutions that will run on the smallest of systems (such as toonboom)

But they dont really support web based stuff.. would be nice to see this grow on the web though with some linkage abilities and better scripting support it would beat the crap outa flash (if adobe werent such market hogs)

Have you noticed how people with iphones will make a point of refering to them as iphones (instead of just saying phone or mobile) and needlessly mentioning them in conversation?
i.e - "look at these pics i took ON MY IPHONE" or "I'll give him a ring ON MY IPHONE" etc

I eventually went for a nokia 5800, so won't be worrying about phones for another couple of years. Cracking piece of kit, seems to do everything an iphone or hero does (as well as having flash support) and only costs me £20pm with unlimited net, unlimited texts. I'd have to pay almost twice that for an iphone.

Call me old fashioned by I only really like my phone to make phone calls and send text messages. My dad and my sister both have iphones and they're both intolerably smug about them! Do not want.
