Funny how things work out, I hadn't really done any PC repairs (apart from work PCs) for years, now I get 3 in the space of a week.
It all started with my mum in law, she bought an Acer laptop (not a bad one either) about 18 months ago and being technically clueless with an internet connection and no fear of .exe files it naturally stopped working properly (she thinks it was dropped too). She then lent it to us a couple of weeks ago saying, if you can get it working you can keep it for a while. The keyboard and mousepad were totally buggered, fortunately the USB ports were working so a quick trip to Argos and I could actually type and mouse. I spent about 3 hours deleting crap and installing AVG and in the end I had fully functioning laptop wirelessly connected to the internet.
Then my nephew buys this very very nice HP Laptop second hand, only it turns out the power supply doesn't work and the hard drive hadn't been wiped. Power supply on order (£12). Hopefully there's no other problems that a Windows XP reinstall won't fix.
Last night I got a call from my sister in law saying her laptop had died, was up to midnight fixing it as all the CDs for it had disappeared (ever tried to get Advent drivers?) and the backup partition had been buggered around with.
Really thinking about going back into the PC fixing game but I know from experience it can be a world of pain. Me "The cheapest and quickest way to fix this problem would be to reinstall Windows, you will loose everything on the hard disc though" Customer "Ok, do it" Me " You sure there's nothing you want to keep" Customer "no, no" Me "You have your Windows CD?" Customer pulls out a variety of CDs, none of them relating to that PC in any way at all. If they do relate to that PC they are scratched to death.
PC is fixed after 5 hours of installation pain. Customer "You did keep all our wedding photos and my save games didn't you?"

LOL! Unless your a masocist with sadistic tendancies, then don't do it! A world of pain and suffering awaits you In fact if anyone askes "Are you any good with computers?" Deny everything. In fact ask them "What's a computer?". I had nearly wiped the existance of "Advent" from my mind. Grrr!!! One of my neighbours had brought a laptop from a mate at his work. It was a bit shonky to say the least. A format and a reinstall were in order. Could I find the driver for the sound card? Could I buggery! Oh PC world were very helpfull on the phone, however. Take it into the store and watch their highly trained teckies run a mile!!! I predict that in your future all your family and their friends beat a path to your door and you are doomed for ever to fix their IT! Mercy upon your soul!

It's also unwise to let anyone know that you're good with Photoshop.

In fact ask them "What's a computer?". you can deftly avoid this by being the only one without a mac so when anyone asks you "are you good with computers" you can say yes, but when they say "how 'bout macs" you can scoff at them and bitch about macs until they leave you alone. 2 birds with one stone

imagine FCP as a windows app?
actually.. imagine FCP and Logic Pro as windows apps !!!
