Really they could charge what they want because there's no other game like it.

Games close are:

- Stalker
- Bioshock
- Amnesia

But none really hit the exact same spot.

Journey?

The thing that bugs me about the pricing is just that its really short and has almost 0 replayability except for maybe 1 or 2 reruns to get the other narrations and to decipher some of the paintings. Im not devaluating the quality. But then again they dont really add to the plot anymore, its very open and in that case I usually never go with the obvious common conception.

But what do you think makes this so unique? Its form of purposely having a very blurry story that seems to be full of symbolism and is very open to interpretation? In that regard, you could count in games like for example Limbo, Superbrothers S&S or any other game that tells its plot through very vague means without cutscenes and without showing you much except for landscapes.

I think Dear Esther could just be a great short story someone put on the internet, and its using the video game medium to visualize its plot while still keeping its mysteriousness. In that regard its very unique to me.

I know it's an annoying comparison to make but if you want to get onto a "value" thing other people have suggested you look at DE as a movie, which would probably cost about a five to watch and last about the same amount of time. I'll agree that compared to other games it doesn't work very well in a $/h sense but I guess I don't really mind. Maybe it's because I have a job but I feel its kind of pointless to talk value when the price is so low. I'd rather pay #10 for 5 hours of good entertainment than #2 for 20 hours of bad entertainment. "Good", "bad", "expensive" and "cheap" are obviously pretty subjective though and that's without even going into what we value about owning it. (You could value the extra sound clips, the new soundtrack, the artwork, the fact you've given money to the creators, the fact you can impress the interesting sex with it etc etc)

You say there's no replay value because there's nothing more to work out. That's an acceptable response, but there's no reason that you have to look at it as something that has to be cracked open and solved and then left alone. People re-read books, rewatch tv shows, relisten to songs. It's not wrong or worse or stupid to say that once you know the mystery the thing loses its value, but it's not the only way to look at things.

The games I suggested were other games where you can walk about and learning about other people and wondering what has happened to them. But I think Esther is unique in that I've never played a game with a story as emotionally complex and lyrically delivered. There are games with stories as good and as complicated but mostly in very different ways. It's basically a game with no gameplay about a sad man who has some complicated feelings and I don't think there's another game/interactive experience/whatever like that.

Thats a very valid and good point. I dont know, a game for me has to have atleast some replayability, not meaning multiplayer fyi. Theres the occasional game that I even end up buying multiple times with no remorse because I really like it, Dear Esther is a good game indeed, but I find it rather neat and only the first step to hopefully a new generation of videogames where storytelling becomes a unique and distinctive element again and doesnt reuse old established formulas (see Duke Nukem Forever for instance, that game is the epidemy of the Half Life 2 hype 8 years later). I wanna see more games like this but just richer. This is more like a little neat game that started of as an experiment. A successful experiment.

Yo they made another one of those. "Everybodys gone to the rapture", Ps4 only for the time being though booooo.

I knew this was made by the Dear Esther guys so I blindly bought it without looking at trailers and the such. It is very similiar to #DE but fixes some of the problems I had with that game. The area is pretty open and despite some artificial blockades that get removed with story progress, you can pretty much explore at your own pace and will. They let you be a little bit more interactive by letting you listen to phonecalls and casette tapes along the way.

I dont actually wanna say more other than its pretty good and worth playing if you enjoyed Dear Esther. This is best played without knowing what its about.

I had actually been following "Everybodys Gone to the Rapture" since they announced it years ago. I've enjoyed everything The Chinese Room has done so far, including "A Machine for Pigs", and was certainly looking forward to this one.

After playing through it in 2 long sittings I can say that the game offers a fantastic sense of intrigue not only to the main plot, but into the lives of all the characters that keeps you wanting to press on and learn more. The only thing I'll mention is that the sprint function is so anaemic that is may as well not exist which was the only thing that bothered me.

Like Karthus said. It's certainly worth picking up if you liked Dear Esther.

Yeah the movement speed really started to annoy me after a while, especially when youre indoors you move sooooo slow. Like I get it, its an exploration game and you want me to see your nice world, but especially when its so open and involves backtracking at certain points, let me traverse faster.

I think Gone Home and especially Kentucky Route Zero achieve certain things better than what the Chinese Room is going for with Dear Esther and this game but overall they're all great games and I really am enjoying this new genre of adventure games that are purely about exploring.

I still need to check out Machine for Pigs, I think I still owe it to Burnalot for losing a bet lol

Real bummer that its PS4 only. Its using Cryengine and if theres anything I can take away from playing that game its that the new consoles are already a huge joke. The resolution is crummy and the fps dips quite hard at certain spots. This would look killer on a PC

Oh yeah hot tip: Turning on subtitles really helps for non native speakers. I couldnt tell some of the voices apart so to have an indicator at the bottom whos speaking improved the experience for me.

It always crippled me knowing I'd have to enter a house and lose my speed. Heh.

I've yet to play Gone Home or Kentucky Route Zero, the first of which I own, and the second of which has been on my wishlist for some time. I'll have to take a look at them.

And yes, I also noticed the FPS dip well below the 20 mark fairly regularly. It's a shame. This whole generation has been a bit of a bummer so far. The only games that have looked at all impressive have been by Kojima (P.T and Metal Gear).

With KRZ wait until theyre done. Its been absolutely nervewrecking waiting for act 4 to come out, its been 1 year and 3 months at this point, I was really afraid that it fell apart but they went on twitter earlier this month and calmed people down. Its one thing when a game is incomplete and youre waiting for the conclusion to come out, its another thing when that game is fantastic and you wanna say that its maybe one of the best ever made (which some people have already proclaimed) but that statement can only go so far when that story isnt even done yet. I want them to make it as good as possible but god damnit...
