(I don't think the burn effect triggers it, although fall damage does).

Narp, burn turns it on, so yea, just run away abit, then turn it on so it looks like you died from the afterburn. They usuallly turn around and go away after that. Also if you're on fire with no one around. litteraly click it on then off, puts out the flames and you use hardly any of it. Win

Okay, I got the Huntsman this evening. Perfect weapon for me. I can't even hit something with the sniper rifle, so my bow has a personal inscription "Failure guaranteed" on the shaft.
Still got one kill: I was aiming on a player on a balcony, miscalculated the trajectory and hit somebody directly below Wink

I see why they did the system, but it's still a bit weird.

I think it's definitely better for new players...
They buy the game, start playing, after a period of time they get a new toy to play with. They'll play that class for a while because they have something new, hence a way to make them play a class they don't usually play.

My thoughts on new stuff:
Razorback - pretty cool, saved my skin a few times, don't really notice the slowness in movement speed that much, definitely notice not having the smg.
Huntsman - oh my days. best weapon ever. really like it. need to remember not to overpower it though or it becomes really inaccurate. (and sorry to hex for repeatedly killing you with it last night)
Demoman Afro - YES! YES! I have a hat! Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

Really want the jarate!

Agreed but for players who got it from the start, I personally feel a little bit miffed.

I slaved hard to get the achievments for my none normal characters.  (I normally play demo, spy or engi).  As soon as the first of MY chars updates comes, I think cool I'll get all the achs n weapons very quickly.  True enough 2 hours of playing and I have 16 achs for spy (without whoaring, thats just reading them and doing them in normal play).

But I have no new weapons and the way this system works I may NEVER get them....... WTF

They should have left it so random drops works for all weapons AND acheivments earn them also! (Which still work for the old weapons....)

Also as people can get pickups regardless of who they play they may get all the spy/demo/engi weapons and never use them whereas I will want them SOOOOO bad and play the characters constantly but never see them

I'll play some more and see what happens but if I never get the new weapons, I cant see me playing this 'random, no skill needed, and skill not rewarded' game any longer...

No offense, egg, but right now you sound a lot like UC (which atm sounds a lot like steam forums).

It's a new system. It doesn't work correctly. It will be fixed.
And I'm quite positive that the people at Valve are even more upset about this hicup than you or most other people because this is bad for the reputation and will result in more man-hours to fix it.

Personally I'm happy that the new stuff it's completely uncoupled from the achievements. If anything they can couple them with future rare decorative items.

And who knows, as much as I dislike the idea of item trading it might in fact be a great alternative route for people who really want a new item soooooooo badly. I may have to rethink my position on that ...

Warning, wall of text ahead! tl;dr-people will taste brahms' spade!

Frankly, I think the system is great. Yes it sucks for people who haven't got any (or not the ones they want) yet, but it's the only system that allows for normal play.
With the achievement system it was impossible to get a normal match running without class limits within the first week and even weeks afterwards the class got picked unusual often.
I stayed up during the night, so I got to see the first hours of the update: At first people didn't know about the new system so it was still teams of spies and snipers. But once most of them realized it, there were decent matches going on, a few hours after the update, something unthinkable with the old system.

Of course there is the option of giving every unlock to everybody from the beginning, but I think that would lead to the same problem: Everybody would want to try them right nauw!, ruining the matches and leading to skewed views of unlocks. (Axetinguisher? What for, it does nearly no damage to these pyros!)

I really like the way it is now: Everybody plays his normal class and once he gets an unlock he's like: Cool, something new, gotta try that. And switches to the class. ONE person, not the entire team.


Plus, like others have mentioned, it really helps new players. Imagine somebody bought the game after this weekend and tried to get all unlocks via achievements. It would take him weeks, maybe months. With the new system he would get them way faster (imagine further the trade system were in place. I'm sure the entire wdg-community could fully equip a player with the old unlocks.) and that without having to play the specific class with a disadvantage.
