Yo yo players and playettes. I was thinking of upping my PC sound area. Seems like a reasonable thing to update.  Right now I've got the worst speakers possible. God I hate them they're like. Argh. I hate them.

I've also got a very stupid onboard sound card.

And my headset is going.

I don't play music loud, and I got 0.00 use for surrounding sounds, but when i play music out of my speakers I want to be able to distinguish it from... like.. itself. God these speakers suck. So does anyone have any recommendations for soundcard/speaker combos? I'm not looking to spend colossal money because a high quality sound system would be wasted if it has to be running at the same time as a computer with a fan. But maybe just a bit of an upgrade? £70 overall? Is that asking too much?

I rig my stereo up to my PC, so my advice is just to buy a decent stereo with an aux input. But then again I don't know squat about squat! Also, see the headset thread for headset advice.

for 70 quid your best bet is to buy a second hand amp and a pair of proper bookshelf speakers.
Ideally you sort out the whole music "chain" and switch out the soundcard too, but it's not worth spending your budget on that if you've still got a shitty pair of speakers at the other end.

theyr a pair of the best speakers for less than £100 FACT. They (or theyr bigger brothers) are used in every high end recording studio around the world

(I admit you wont have anything else left for a sound card.. but theyr active (meaning powered by themselves) so you wont need a power amp ect... onboard sound isnt great but its a LOT better than it used to be if you continue to update your drivers... X-Fi is over rated.. I prefere my TC Firewire card

I'm thinking of getting like, a fairly basic sound card, because I think pretty much anything will be an upgrade off my current one. It was a cheap mobo and it just.. It just sucks, everything distorts when i pump up da volume. (by pump up I mean turn up slightly)

For someone who like listening to sounds as much as I do, my sound setup really leaves a lot to be desired. I might just not buy a new headset. This one just has the thing where one phone cuts out until i mes with the volume dial. Not a big deal.

Try with new speakers first before you shell out for another soundcard. I'd put money on it being your shitty speakers causing the distortion.

It's incredibly easy to start spending a hell of a lot of money on audio kit. I spent over 170 quid last month on an external DAC (Digital -> Analog converter) and a decent pair of headphones. The worst thing is that once you hear something good, you can't stand to listen using your old kit any more.

the only reason theyr cheaper is the colour...
those speakers are a ledgend of their own now in music production circles
and the 7w version pack a lot more punch that youd think.. they give my guitar amps a good run for their money!

Edirol are a part of Roland electronics.. they make all sorts of musical instruments/equiptment.. if you play guitar youll know boss pedals who are also owned by Roland
they make awsome products and have lots of support on thier site for positioning ideas and extra setup/modding advice

also.. what headphones are you using?
Im going to get a clipon mic and start using my studio phones again...

I think I will partake dans les Edirol. I would invest many ducats in the arcane equipment called "HIFI SEPARATES" but the river of my cash flow diverts mainly to keeping my stable (of hos) well irrigated with bling, ice, blice, and cetera.

go down to your local pro audio (music production, not hifi) and ask to try em out before you buy them.. youll be impressed

i have come to a "razer" decision...
no more razer headsets for me.. ever!
Im gonna stick to my BeyerDynamics i think.. and have a nice clipon mic for chat.. then use my Genelec Speakers at the same time for the tunes

FYI..
Beyer Dynamic DT770 headphones are the best on the market.. bar none!
if you have any doubts, test them against some bose or B&O ones and youll be astounded! the Bose and B&O are complete shite and the Beyers (at a mere £87 compared to the £200 bose and £500 B&O) sound a million times better...
same goes for the Genelec Speakers... A pair of 8040a speakers will sound better than any hifi seperates you can come up with..

I know this as I spent a lot of my life working in recording studios.. big ones!
I see too many people spend £500 on amps and another £300 on a couple of speakers... its not worth it! you can get better and louder for less!

Also, if you have a decent soundcard you can often set to output on 2 different sound outputs - for example I have the onboard sound on my board, with optical connecting to my home cinema system, and you can still plug a pair of phones into the back panel and have them output seperate sounds.

I'm currently awaiting an X-Fi card that my work have bought for me yay!
