Writing on an article about custom maps.

Any sites dedicated to custom maps worth mentioning?
So far I have FPSBanana, TF2Maps and TF2Wiki (which mentions a number of maps). I would be especially interested in more sites like TF2Maps.

I've always pondered the idea of making a map for many games.....

.... but can never be arsed with it all....(ITS BLOODY HARD TO MAKE A DECENT ONE!)

i wouldn't say its hard egg you could probably do it, its more it takes forever and really cuts into your fapping time. unless you can master mapping and fapping at the same time

I thought those were called "tramp stamps"? In germany the direct traslation would be "arse antlers".

There are other file hosting sites. Filefront comes to mind (with the HL2 TF2 filefront files probably being links to the same content). I'm not going to go digging for any more right now, but check the common sites for download sections (TF2 fan sites, run by companies who host files - ign, gamespot, gamespy, whatever).

I will state that I hate custom maps. Not the idea of them, I love the idea, and I know there's great ones out there, but I just don't have the time to play a tonne of sort of OK maps to find the good ones.

If I'm playing TF on a weekday, I've got at most, an hour and a half, if I have to play an entire bad map, that's most of my time gone.

Add in the fact it's very hard to get them populated enough that it feels like you're playing an actual game, and that is why I will generally avoid them.

This is why I love the way Valve has "officialised" some of them, giving us all a decent shortlist that can often be reasonably populated.

I'll go way out on a limb and say that in my opinion almost all customs are crap, and there's very few which are actually fun to play and aren't just spam fests or novelty maps. I'm all for the idea too but GR and BW (etc) are a huge step above anything I've seen.

contrasting this with l4d the l4d customs i have played are generally of a good standard (if sufficiently developed), I think there though the director plays a larger part in making the gameplay good and aside from remembering to prevent corner-camping and such the actual geometry can be almost anything, whereas a TF2 map requires a brilliant layout.
