Hm... I think I'll stick with 3GHz for now, it's still a fair bit of an overclock and I will bench stuff tonight to see what difference it actually makes. Tried it with 3.2, just for the giggles and it failed prime test after mere seconds even with 1.4v vCore. Don't want to go any higher, it'll be running too hot anyway.

I could switch to 800 MHz RAM, but I only have 2 gigs of those and 4 gigs of this slower RAM. My guess is, any extra overclock I could get from switching would be negated by halving the amount of RAM, wouldn't it? I can't cool any more than 3 GHz properly anyway, so I'll stay at this for now.

So is my RAM actually overclocked if it's running with 333Mhz, because it was manufactured for 200MHz if SPD is to believe? Because I think it's been running like that even before I started this overclocking experiment... Tried to actually set it to timings that are shown in SPD tab of CPU-Z and it failed to boot, so I'm not trusting it that much.

That Exhaust is an interesting idea, but its use will probably be limited, if anything it will be working against the fans (there is two) of the video card and also only cover one of them. This card is huge, I had to remove one HDD cage to even be able to fit it in my case.

I guess I'll go with a DX11 compliant card somewhen next year which should be both faster and cooler, so not a big problem there. Thanks for the input though, didn't know those existed!

Okay, so 3 GHz it is (though I'm currently running a test at 3.06GHz, just for the giggles), let the benching begin... in about 8 hours. ^^

Nice overclock

I've setup my new PC (on an Asus board now, the RAM was incompatible with the ASRock one it seems. Anyone need an ASRock P55 motherboard cheap? ).

I also set it up almost immediately with the XMP profile via. the easy overclocking section of the BIOS - this has set up the RAM timings and voltages properly, which is a good RAM speed boost at least (and the clock speed of the CPU is up too).

I'm going to test this a bit more (running prime during the day hours - has done 14 hours fine). I think the max temps in CoreTemp was 70 degrees, which dropped when Prime95 went off. Also ran the Intel Overclocking utility tests for 10 hours (although I forgot to enable CoreTemp there).

Is it worth me going for any more on my i5 with the stock cooler? I think I might investigate the multiplier settings. I need to note down what I'm currently using (or what the BIOS set more so) what the defaults are, and what I can get it up to.

I'm not sure if I should optimise so I can get a reasonable single-core boost using the Intel tech (although using the gadget...I've never seen it come on, I'll get that tool that can tell you CPU mhz and see if it pops up on that perhaps), or just go for the maximum speed and ignore the single-core thing - since I think it restricts some of the overclocking.

Anyone with a new i5 or i7 know more about the tech and best practices here?

Im not sure about overclocking i5/i7.. the memory and fsb controller is now inside the chip meaning you're less limited by your mobo which is good news It also means you dont have to fuss about with the fsb which makes it easier.. but you are limited to a set number of clock speeds.. its basically just changing multipliers and vcore while keeping your ram in check

Hmm, I'll recheck, I'm not sure if it was 70 then, maybe it was 60. I'll not bother if 70 is "too high", and leave it as it is unless I have problems in the future.

So it run the Prime torture test for over 10 hours without an error at 3.06 GHz at 1.4v. But it was at 65° in the end and even at 75° at some point (temp max), so clearly it's stable, but too hot. So I'll stick with 3GHz, which is scratching at 60°. Now to the benchmarks!!!

Alright, only benched with that funny benchmark that was in the OC package and the demo version of 3Dmark 06.

It really shows with about 40% on the total score and 70% on the CPU score with only 25% MHz more on clock speed. Interesting. Also, yay!

Mine i bought overclocked, but i posted a guide earlier, you can easily get 4 GHz out of them, thats what mine is overclocked to. I'm just waiting on a gfx card (no onboard whoops), then I guess I should run prime and things so we can compare a store bought overclock. I bought the bundle linked below in the end

i've been looking at i7s recently and overclocking them. apparently they clock up to 4 GHz nicely but you need a top cpu cooler. overclockers do some overclocked bundles for you: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=BU-030-OE&groupid=43&catid=339&subcat=1333 take a look at the monster it comes with.

Your case has a fan filter built into it. I should know - we have the same case. It's pretty good at collecting the dust

yes i realised over lunch that attaching filters to the exhaust would be pretty fail.

I have 3 of them strapped to my rad, I don't even know it's on most of the time even at full blast

Dust filters are also a good idea, but you have to clean them regularly

Okay, it was in fact maxing out at 70 degrees. I'm going to leave it, was stable after over a dozen hours in 3 different days of Prime95 testing, and it is slightly overclocked with the RAM XMP profile applied (2.7Ghz instead of 2.66...not much eh? need to still try the turbo mode).

If I find I could use some more speed (I doubt since my graphics card despite being good is the limitation for FPS it seems), I'll come back to it and maybe get better cooling (a better heatsink and CPU fan) and do some more work on it I think increasing the multiplier or whatever would be easiest. In any case, happy as it is I guess for now.
