what gain is there to be had from turning it off?

You get correct readings of CPU speeds, when idle Smiley

Outside of ORTHOS (100% usage) it keeps CPU running at full speed when on half load so no performance drop just beacuase your not hammering it Smiley

Think of it as turbo lag in a car Wink

Okay, more of curiosity than anything:
When running a Prime95 stresstest my core-temps (i5) are leveling at around 70 degrees (RealTemp). Idle around 30.
I'm using the Intel boxed cooler.

Are those values alright? (Given that you are mentioning temps not topping 60 here)

Each setup is different.....

So many variables can affect temp that I would worry too much.  As long as your CPU is running as fast as it can within safe limits, and is stable, then dont worry Wink

Are those values alright? (Given that you are mentioning temps not topping 60 here)

I have a dual core Intel E8400 that maxes out around 50 - 57 degrees Celsius under load from Prime 95 (several hours run, not just a few minutes). It idles around the 22 - 26 mark. Both sets of temps depend upon the ambient temperature of course. This chip is 45nm and is running at stock speed and with the default Intel cooler. I have an Antec 900 case (has big fans which are good)

I would expect a quad core part to be warmer maybe, but I seem to recall the i5 and i7 being reported as good overclockers so if that is true then their temps should be good at standard speeds under load.

70 does seem high to me, but clearly within the specification for the chip otherwise you would see it clock down and then shut down. 70 is that "magic" number that I would look for to indicate that things could indeed be cooler than they are. I personally wouldn't be happy to see 70 on a stock speed CPU - especially a modern 45nm part (or are they smaller than that now?).

Maybe re-seat the HSF?

*EDIT* You are aware that some software will not provide the correct temperatures right? They can take different readings. Might want to try a range of temperature monitoring apps and see what they report?

Agree with Junta, 70 would be on the high-side for me, but if that's under a stress test I wouldn't be too worried for normal use.

70=way too high...
sort that out quick!
60=ideal max

Not an exact science but I have never had a cpu explode or degrade below those temps.. others may have but I havn't.. Its aknown and accepted limit

Also.. john you could extend the life of that cpu for a few quid!
Recently put one of these on a Q6600 and it gave a 25degC drop on load temps over the stock intel hsf which is a bargain!
Its basically a freezer 7 but with a different badge... works better IMO

bit of a bitch to fit even compared to the stock cooler... you have to remove the fan from the fins and put it back once it's mounted.. but worth the effort as itll give you some heat headroom and extend the life of your rig Smiley

Also egg.. you went for a TRUE? they're the bollox but you have to strap 2 120mm fans to get the best out of them... as passive they're pretty pants..
for that job I recomend THESE as they're super silent

Or more to the point, anything that's going to give me a significant improvement over a Zalman 9700?

the TRUE that Egg pointed out is the best aircooler out afaik
but you need at least 1 fan strapped to it; 2 is better

Correct it is THE BEST !! Smiley I have 1 120mm fan on it.... never thought of putting two on ...hmmmmm

Only thing you have to watch is if it will fit into your case..... I have the antec P182, and I literally have only 5mm space between top of heatsink and other side of case  Shocked

EDIT, Ta for the link might get an extra fan Smiley

Thanks Jordan (+1)

I'm afraid that I've lost all my PC building confidence after a nasty incident destroying a Socket 775 cooler on my old motherboard. I hate the stupid pushpin retention system!

Despite wanting to improve the cooling, I'm in the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" mind at the moment (sadly).

I will get my courage back, specifically since I would rather get a heatsink with a solid backing plate that the main assembly screws onto (instead of the push pins). Any recommendations gratefully received. I know that this would mean removing my motherboard, but I can live with that (I don't seem to screw up motherboard installs or anything other than a heatsink install on socket 775).

In all seriousness, I think I will actually install an AMD Athlon 2 Quad core some time. They support DDR2 and DDR3 (with the right motherboard), run at a decent speed and are based on the new 45nm Phenom technology. They look very good given the price (even though the Intel CPU's still reign supreme). You know me.. can't resist a bargain on the price / performance.

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-258-AM&groupid=701&catid=6&subcat=803
http://www.pcpro.co.uk/reviews/processors/351592/amd-athlon-ii-x4-620

My computing budget has dropped massively of late.. especially due to my increased family and Mrs Junta out of work.

Well I killed two PCs within 10 minutes once upon a time. Smiley Faulty PSU killed the CPU, which killed the MB of the second PC I put it in to test what got killed, which then killed the original CPU that was in it in first place, which apparently also killed 2 of the 4 of the RAM modules.

So... 1xPSU, 2xCPU, 1xMainboard and 2xRAM Modules all within about 10 Minutes. I rock.
