Hmm, I just found out that my mainboard (ASUS P5B) supports Core2Quad CPUs up to the interesting models, and I wonder if it would be worth to upgrade (have a Core2Duo 2.4 GHz ATM).

I realize that most application will not run any faster, but I assume it's reasonable to assume that running a number of programs at the same time (something I do a lot) would run more smoothly.
Opinions?

I would recommend the Zalman 9700. It's second on the list deadly posted, only about £40 and so long as you're not too scared to lever it in with a screwdriver it'll never fall off. Ever.

I don't think you'd get as much performance increase as if you spent the extra money on more RAM/ Graphics Card.  For example my E8400 cost £150, for that money you'd get 4Gb RAM and an Ati 4850.

but depending on the rest of your specs, it might not be worth it as itll just bottleneck everything else which would be annoying

I agree with Jordan, but it depends upon the applications as well? Some are better coded than others and make better utilisation of multiple processing cores.

In any event the OS will also best judge how to execute. I'm sure you'd notice some improvement with a quad core Smiley

For stuff like web browsing (no matter how many tabs) you wont notice much of a difference.. if you have 2 screens it would be nice for running flash maybe..

If its MS office stuff.. dont bother
For Adobe suite it makes sence as youll notice the gain

Help us out a bit Tea.. tell us the rest of your current rig (inc mobo/RAM/CPU/GPU ect) and which apps you run regularly and which not so regularly

Then again Tea's probably using a good old german Linotype-Hell typesetter churnig out his articles in a nice and heavy Fraktur font. (I can just picture his nefarious grin in front of the keyboard...)

Anyways, methinks the Tea does not have a very urgent need for a faster processor, since running many programs in parallel is much rather helped by metric fucktons of RAM.

Children, children, I'm using a device which directly stores brainwaves into the computer.
Takes me 10 minutes to write an editorial and 5 hours to edit out all the sexual fantasies I had.

As for my rig:
ASUS P5B
Intel E6600 Core 2 Duo
4GB RAM DDR2
XP 32bit (so more RAM at this point makes no sense)
Nvidia 8800GT

There's not that much heavy processing applications I'm using (some video cutting and encoding), but I really do tend to do a dozen things at once.
I don't use much programs which are optimized to work multi-threaded, so I really don't expect anything to work much faster, but was hoping the system would be running more smoothly.
Then again I have no idea how well XP is optimized to maintain 4 cores.
On the other hand I intent to switch to Win7 in autumn, so this is not the main point. And if I switch to 64bit the RAM is on the table again.
Which brings me to another question: The existing CPUs (like the 8er Intel Quad) do provide 64bit, right? (EM64T)
