on a side note,  I fucking hate that horrible push pin retention system of intels. Building a pc for a mate atm with an "arctic freezer 7 pro" and it was an utter pain to get fitted right.
Not just me murdering the Socket 775 coolers then? WTF.. stupid design!

I hated AMD Socket A cooler retention. The fact u needed a flat blade screw driver to force the HSF clip over to secure it, filled me with the dread that I'd slip and plough straight through the PCB.

I've got a Zalman 9500SE cooler - eliminates the problem with the socket design. 2 square plastic brackets that screw into each other on the top and bottom of the motherboard, then there is one screw to attach the heatsink Smiley

The only thing I'm not so sure about is that the heatsink has a tendancy to rotate? Not sure if that's a problem or not, and it can't rotate very far but it does have a bit of give in it.

I believe thats a problem with the 9500 coolers in general..
Its not supposed to happen and I hear they have sorted it with the 9700 ones..

But as long as your temps are still good I cant see there being a big problem

Yeah, i have a 9700 which is pretty huge but doesn't move around at all, the only thing is that they decided to go for the flat-headed screwdriver levery thing.

To rerail the thread (slightly), the PC is built and running fine - after 6 Windows reinstalls.

My XP CD was scratched to buggery and wasn't copying essential files so XP was loading, but not working properly.  Took the CD to Blockbuster who have a machine for fixing these things, £2 and 5 mins later I have a fully functioning XP CD.

Damn this PC is fast now, didn't realise how slow TF2 was getting until I logged on yesterday, has improved my game no end Smiley.  Steam starts instantly and TF2 loads in about 30 secs as opposed to 2 or 3 mins.

GTA still runs like shit though.

This is probably the final instalment in my epic upgrade, I ordered a cheap Coolermaster Elite case to put all the old bits in to make a functioning PC for my niece, the case turned up yesterday and it's way bigger, better designed and more user friendly than my gorgeous minimalist brushed ali Lian Li case so I spent the evening swapping all the bits over.  Even the massive heatsink fitted in.

Just wish I had a black DVD-RW rather than a beige one.

you have a few options there mate..
paint the front of the one you have, or just get a bezzle/facia for it.. theyr both cheap options Smiley

or you could just get a new black one.. theyr not exactly expensive compared to all of your other parts.. and most likely one of the parts youll use most Cheesy
thats why I went the extra mile and got a bluray burner

I'd rather have Socket A retention tbh, sure it's a bit of a pain getting it on, but at least you don't have to worry about the cooler tumbling free at random when one of the push pins decides to push itself back out again.
I have this horrible feeling it's going to happen whilst the comp is running, and fall onto the graphics card, taking out the whole PC at once.

but anyway, give me a backplate and 4 screws any day.

That of course depends on your budget for such an item..
but I believe that the cheaper Zalmans have a nut and bolt approach to them Smiley

I would also really like some opinions on this bad boy.. in theory its shaping up to be a great performer and (less likely) perhaps the future of heatsinks in general..
Introduction to water in your PC for less than £30? bargain if it works
