Still rubbish after all these years

WWW
« on: January 20, 2009, 09:14:23 PM »

(I know there was a similar discussion not too long ago, but it quickly went into directions not suited for me)

I'm not really satisfied with my current screen (Samsung 226BW). Okay for gaming but it's rather dark from a straight-to-low angle (which is the default for me).

So I'm looking for a monitor which is more stable in brightness (not necessarily colors; I'm not working on graphics or photos) and still supports gaming on a non-competetive level. Preferred size: 22-24. Price range should be between £ 200-300, more only if the quality justifies the price.

There were some good reviews on a HP (HP LP2275w) but I'm unsure if it's good enough for gaming.

Excuse me for having to reiterate this, especially since it is a bit outside of your price range, but I happen to really like the Dell 2408 WFP.
Okay, its main drawback (for me) is having to use Vsync to avoid tearing artifacts for gaming, which effectively limits me to 60fps, but considering my overall system this is still very feasible.
You get loads of inputs for the money, and the panel (SPVA instead of the more common TN) excels in the viewing angle area.
Sorry if that wasn't much help though. Cheesy

I don't know if that HP is the same - but a lot of the HP monitors have glossy screens - I couldn't possibly use one for gaming.

Might look pretty, but i'll be damned if i wanna see my ugly mug everytime I use my pc!

I have a samsung t260.. its an awsome screen... Im pretty sure you can get the 24" version for less than £300
bargain if you ask me....
Before that I had a basic Dell Widescreen and that was also sweet! You can most likely get a 26" Dell in your price range!

Either way youll be a happy bunny! although it wont improve your frag rate

BenQ also make some awsome gaming screens.. value for money is sweet!

I don't know if that HP is the same - but a lot of the HP monitors have glossy screens - I couldn't possibly use one for gaming.

I have one, Awesome monitor.
Although it's cheap, the internals are good. It uses a *VA panel instead of TFT (like the expensive Dell 2408), so you get much better viewing angles.

Can you tell it's quite for work today? Cheesy

Anyhoo,

How about a 22" LG. Got VGA and DVI. But no HDMI (not sure if this is a problem). Resolution of 1680 x 1050. An awsome contrast ratio od 10,000:1. A 2MS responce time. Yours for ££152.89 inc Vat.
But none in stock here...
http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Displays/Monitors/TFT+20+-+23/22%22+LG+W2252TQ+Widescreen+LCD+Monitor+?productId=31920
LG WEB site here...
http://uk.lge.com/products/model/detail/widescreen_w2252tq.jhtml

Could I tempt you with a 22" Iiyama Prolite? It's 16:9 ratio. A resolution of 1920 x 1080. A response time of 5MS. Not sure about the contrast ratio, claims it can do 10,000:1 but says you get a great picture at 1,000:1.
Anyway, you can get it here for £164.39 inc Vat
http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Displays/Monitors/TFT+20+-+23/22%22+Iiyama+Prolite+E2208HDS+Full+HD+16%3A9+Widescreen+Monitor+?productId=34004
Iiyama WEB site link for it here...
http://www.iiyama.com/en_GB/Product/category/2/product/158#showtab2

Wait, I got more Cheesy

How about a 22" Samsung? Resolution of 1680 x 1050. A response time of 5MS. A good contrast ratio of 8,000:1. and VGA & DVI conections. Yours for £198.59 inc VAT. But out of stock here...
http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Displays/Monitors/TFT+20+-+23/Samsung+SM2243BW+22%22+Widescreen+Black+LCD+VGA+and+DVI+?productId=32115

Or maybe a 22" Asus? Resolution of 1680 x 1050. A 2MS response time. A good contrast ratio of 5,000:1. And has conections for VGA, DVI and HDMI. Yours for £201.19 inc VAT. None here...
http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Displays/Monitors/TFT+20+-+23/22%22+Asus+LCD+Monitor+with+built+in+webcam+and+HDMI+?productId=33320

However I think you can't go far wrong with this...
http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Displays/Monitors/TFT+24+%2B/24%22+Dell+S2409W+Widescreen+Flat+Panel+Monitor+?productId=33675
£229.94 inc Vat gets you a 24" Dell. 16:9 ratio. Full HD with 1920 x 1080. Conects to VGA, DVI & HDMI.

Or save money for an inch less...
http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Displays/Monitors/TFT+24+%2B/23%22+Dell+S2309W+Widescreen+Flat+Panel+Monitor+?productId=34112
Same Dell screen but only 23". This can be yours for £195.44 inc VAT.

I know I've only listed products from Aria, but it just happened to be one of the first sites I clicked on. Other on-line retailers are avalible. However Aria do a dead pixel check for about £30 on a 24", so you should get a sound screen.

By the sound of it you know what your after, you've set your budget so it's just a case of finding something you want. I can't be of that much help as I'm still running my little 17" Acer. But I've had it for over 4 years now and it still works great.

Hope that was of some help Smiley

Confusion disgused as helpfullness Cheesy
Mission accomplished :-)

A lot of great input, guys. Consequently I'm having even less a clue what to get.

So let's approach the problem from another angle:

Size is a minor criteria. So far 22'' is okay, but a bit bigger would be sweet (space is not a problem). My graphics card is a Nvidia 8800GT, so resolutions up to 1920x1080 (or similar) should work well.
HDMI is not a must (I don't think quality is different via HDMI and DVI).
I don't need speakers or similar nonsense like webcams. USB-Port would be nice, but is not important.
What would interest me would be a pivot-function. But I guess this is much rarer with bigger screens, so consider this secondary.
No glossy screen (I don't want to see Rips face either)
What kind of panel would you recommend? (since TN-panels are a difficult issue)
What's the max response time which still works for gaming (for a non-pro like me)? Is 6ms grey-to-grey still okay (oh, the spell-checking is american)

And with all the trigger-happy linking keep in mind that I will try to buy the screen here in Germany (unless the offer is compelling).

You can buy a screen from an UK site and you might save some money, the pound is very low atm, about the same as the Euro (that's what you use right? or are you on Mark still?)
