Well, the ingame browser can save you some of the alt-tabbing. For example vlc can be controlled via web interface.

If you really want the best performance out of it and dont want to mess with configs and all this stuff, use this:

-dxlevel 81 -w 1680 -h 1050 (Set it after your rig) -window -noborder -console -novid -heapsize 1572864 -freq 75 -nojoy -noipx -noforcemparms -noforcemaccel -noforcemspd

Window mode gives you more fps and less stutter in 20 player or more-combats, the random crashes that some ppl had were all fixed, so its defo the better option.

What do most of them options do? I'm all for optimisations but, to be honest, setting my DirectX level to 8 isn't something I'd want to do. Why does -noipx even exist anyway? Weird...

Right.. I'm sick of my choices in this matter...
When I start TF2 with the

-noborder -windowed

launch options I get an awful amout of screen stutter.. to the point my rocket jumps are useless and the mouse seems to do what it wants (rather than what I want)
The good thing about these launch controls is that I can alt-tab out.. but my game looks and handles like crap!
I have tried setting new graphics settings ect. to no avail.
If I remove the settings, I am happy while I am playing.. but no alt tab for me!

I read on some forum after doing a google search that

this in the Autoexec should fix the problem but that did crap all...
Is anyone else getting these issues?
Or even better.. does anyone else have another way of alt-tabbing without source being a douche

I have no problems alt-tabbing out with -noborder -windowed enabled - tf2 just runs in the background.

I think it would make a difference if you have your desktop at a different resolution.

Slowness and RAM usage is not the issue, Windows doesn't suddenly page everything on returning to the desktop, there's many high RAM

I'm not so sure on this to be honest - because I for one know that if you are playing a RAM intensive game - when you quit the game you will a) have more ram available than before you started the game (because a lot of extra processes have been paged) and also that your hard-drive will go crazy for a bit bringing things out of the pagefile. This is handled by the OS (but I think some apps can stop themselves from being paged? - but this wouldn't stop *other* apps from being paged). This is why having more RAM is good - less has to be paged and you notice a massive improvement in speed on returning to windows from a RAM intensive game.

Thats why I marked them. Set it after your wishes, I myself play with my own FPS-Config and for me, DX8 is the best way to get 100 fps more then with dx9.

Are you certain about that? Normally window mode reduces performance.

No it actually gives me about 20 fps more. It depends on your computer. My AMD processor  (6000+ X2) isnt really the best for TF2, the support is shit...

Hmm, is there a way to benchmark in tf2?

It's probably not a very good way to do it, but tr_rocketshooting has 16 or so bots jumping up and down in a small area. Drawing all of those models in dx9 with shadows and everything can be quite intensive.

Only other thing I can think of is to use that bots fighting program.

Yeah, I decided to do basically that (tr_walkway though) and it looks pretty useless

My results:
windowed mode costs me 20fps
dx8.1 gave me 40-60fps more
setting it back to dx9.8 and adding nojoy and noipx gave me 40 more fps than in the beginning!

I'm kinda having trouble taking that serious

Edit: Oh and -heapsize 2097152 crashes my game on mapload.
Edit2: Sigh, I'm going crazy. Removing all options again has given me the best fps of them all -.-

How much RAM have you got? that command will allocate 2gb of ram just to tf2 o.0

IPX is a novell networking protocol.  Disabling it means the game doesnt try to communicate across it so 'may' add increased network (latency) performance.

DX8 will improve speeds, but makes the graphics look cack.


IMO, Just buy a better PC and run *everything* at max settings (+flaming gibs cvar) and run the game easily at 60fps or more

Well there is more to it than fps. Reducing graphical features can make the the image "calmer", therefore you can more easily see stuff.

That was possible pretty extreme in UT3
