Any hole's a goal

« on: December 29, 2008, 11:07:32 PM »

Reading Teatime's trilogy thread got me thinking about my favourite single movie ever, and since this required me to make a shortlist first I thought it might make a good discussion in itself. So, I'll kick off:

1) Gladiator (although to be honest they could just loop the double punch he hits the emperor with at the end for 2 and a half hours and it'd still be my top film)
2) Saving Private Ryan
3) Into the Wild
4) Bourne Ultimatum
5) Wall-E

Anyone else?

(Apologies for the double bill of movie threads)

Haha I thought the same about a topic like this.

1. The Big Lebowski
2. Hot Fuzz/Shaun of the Dead <- I don't know, they have to stick together.
3. Clockwork Orange
4. The Dark Knight
5. Starship Troopers

Instead of Private Ryan I would say Band of Brothers, but BoB is not a movie..

Maybe another topic with my favourite tv series.... Cheesy

Bummer! I'm going to have to go and have a think about this. I know Pixar films will feature heavely in my list. Damm depends on my mood and what I want out of a film at any given moment in my life. Manny years ago I'd have included "The Crow" in the list, but it hasn't stood the test of time in my minds eye. I suppose I'd have to put "The Matrix" in there.

Hummm. I think I have a list...

1)    Akira - The first time I found that cartoons could be so different from what I knew. I never looked at Wil-e Cyote the same ever again.

2)    Running Man - Come on! Spandex and some of the corniest one liners in the world ever. What's not to like?

3)    Toy Story - WOW, a film made by computer animation! And then I forgot that fact and got carried off by the story.

4)    The Matrix - Saw it at a cinema in Stevenage. A fantasticly well shot film that fitted the moment perfictly.

5)    Star Wars, A new hope - But the version where Han Shoots first. Don't get me wrong, I like the re-vamped version. BUT HAN SHOT FIRST!!! And that was what made him cool. Why the hell they felt they had to make it look like Greebo was such an incompetant twat and missed a shot at point blank range, I will never know. It was simple, green boy puts a blaster in your chest, you get in some cool final words and blast the git through the table. Ask yourselfs this (Hell I'll set up a new thread and a vote) after seeing Star Wars, did you want to be a Jedi? Or did you want to be Han Solo?

Anyway, that's my list. I suppose the acid test is this. If you had an evening free, and you were flicking though the channels on the TV, and the film was about to start, would you sit down and watch it again?

2. Saving Private Ryan
3. Serenity
4. Monty Python and the Holy Grail
5. Munich

*Subject to change, I'm sure I've forgotten something.

1. Fight club - its dark, its funny - Brad Pitt and Edward Norton both play their best part in any film in fight club and frankly its just do damn different to everything else ever made. David Fincher is an outstanding film maker and did an excellent job with this one.
2. Platoon - IMHO Best war film ever made, certainly the best Vietnam film ever made. Large ensemble cast work very well together and Charlie Sheen manages a serious role without fucking it up.
3. The Empire strikes back - Had to get a Star Wars film in there and this is the best one. FFS it starts with Hoth and just gets better from there on out, also unusually for a family film it ends of a down note rather than the Triumph of the Will scene at the end of the last one.
4. No Country for old men - The most uncompromising and adrenaline fuelled film i have ever seen. no holds barred it just blows through 2 hours, only really stopping for a breath in the last 10 minutes then suddenly stops, not letting you see if Tommy Lee Jones gets to paint the wall with his brains or not.
5. The Matrix - ground breaking when it came out, still stands in good light to this day. somewhat let down by the lacklustre sequels, it is a powerful film watching experience that works much better as a stand alone effort.

Runners up:
Control - The biopic film about Ian Curtis' (of Joy Division Fame) Life. one of the few films i would personally class as 'Beautiful', Every frame is composed with great care and skill making a visual feast. Even if you don't know or like Joy Division's work its worth a watch for its stunning visuals and excellent use of black and white film.
The Shawshank Redemption - If this film doesn't register on a top 10 list then whoever wrote than list either doesn't get the film or has sorely missed out by not watching it.
Shaun of the Dead - One of the funniest film i have ever seen and endlessly quotable. Hot Fuzz doesn't quite compare with this loving parody of the Romero films.
Gladiator - Ridley Scott's Best film, seemingly the reason the word EPIC was created, if ever you wanted to see what Rome looked like in its heyday then this would surely be the place to start. Also featuring some of the best editing i have ever seen, can you argue with a film that has fight scenes so well edited that certain shots only appear for 3 frames and still add something special.
Blade Runner - sorely ignored upon its release i have to say this is Ridley Scott's second best film, part sci-fi, part neo-noir it is a fantastic adaptation of an Philip K. Dick novel that doesn't treat the source material like a bible but rather a frame work to build a fantastic story upon.

Special mentions:
There will be blood - Soundtrack (if you watch it try to just listen to the music, done by the excellent Jonny Greenwood - a fine composer - that's far from anything else in the world of film)
Sin City - Best CG film (basically whores the CG the whole way though but does it better than Lucas did on the prequel films)
Dark knight - Best comic book adaptation (had to find a category for it, too good to leave out, basically made by Heath Ledger's fantastic performance)
Akira - Best Animated film (Best cartoon of all time by a long long way)
National Lampoon's Animal House - Best comedy (if you don't know why then you haven't seen it)
Aliens - Best Sci-Fi
The Godfather Part II - Sequel better than the original award

it seems i may have put more thought into this than i originally intended Cheesy - Yay for 6 in the morning posts

1) The Big Lebowski
2) Usual Suspects
3) Blade Runner
4) Fight Club
5) Advent Children

4th was a close run thing between Fight Club and Fargo, but decided Fight Club was that bit more special as I stole my first copy of it from the Woolies I used to work at! As for Advent Children, it's only up there because of the love and amount of time I wasted of FFVII, my all time favourite game.

Tv Series would probably be (without too much thought)
1) Blackadder
2) Family Guy
3) Lost
4) Simpsons
5) Robot Chicken/Modern Toss

Hmm, top 5. I'm not sure, I've got several dozen I'd be happy with.

The Godfather (I, II), Lord of the Rings, The Matrix, Shawn of the Dead, Spinal Tap, Indiana Jones, Citizen Kane, Pulp Fiction, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Sin City, The Shawshank Redemption, Groundhog Day, Se7en, The Princess Bride, Gladiator, Galaxy Quest, The Big Labowski, Four Weddings and a Funeral, The Usual Suspects, anything by Studio Ghibli.

As for 5 to choose, some good choices from other people - I'd probably go for:

- The Shawshank Redemption
- The Matrix
- This Is Spinal Tap
- Pulp Fiction
- The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (or a studio Ghibli film, like Spirited Away).

There also some runners up - I do like Fight Club, Fargo, Blade Runner, Monty Python films, many Pixar films, Shawn of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and lots more I can't remember off the top of my head.

Unable to comply ...

Far too many excellent movies to narrow it down to 5.
Perhaps a top 50? ...

PS: Final, I'm under the impression we could have a field day on a topic like that :-)

Aw... but the point is that you HAVE to chose the top 5?

Like if you went away on an island and could only pack 5 films, which ones would you take?

That's what the basis I went on, those 5 I'd be happy with on a desert island, although a few of the others are close seconds, and there are multitudes of other top 5 or top 10's based on other criteria (I'd say some of the others are much more enjoyable the first time you watch them for instance, the second and third time can get to the point you don't want to watch it again. Memento, which I forgot to add, is like that, as is Fight Club).

Bah, shove your point where the sun doesn't shine :-p

Since I appraoch everything in a very complicated way it's just fitting that I have very different reasons why I like a particular movie. On an island I would probably prefer movies I could watch over and over again, but those wouldn't be necessarily those I like the most.
Example from above: "No Country for Old Man". Without doubt an excellent movie. Yet no movie I would want to watch once a week. On the other hand I have a number of movies I can see over and over again without getting tired of them (perhaps not once a week, though :-)).

Besides that:
How do you compare "Citizen Kane" to "Matrix"? "Wizard of Oz" to "Indiana Jones"? "12 angry men" to "Terminator 2"? "Shawshank Redemption" to "Wall-E"?

So many films and the Star Wars films don't quite make the shortlist
1. Pulp Fiction
2. The Italian Job (the first one)
3. Flushed Away (I have to have the film with Millicent Bystander in)
4. Shawshank Redemption
5. Kill Bill 1 & 2 (well they started out as 1 film)
