Team Fortress was an original mod for Quake 2 - as I recall. Then updated for every Quake engined game thereafter - including Wolf ET as I recall. Team Fortress for HL2 (TFC as we now know it) was developed for HL - probably by Valve acquiring the original TF mod team.
Some of that's probably not quite right.

Team Fortress was originally a mod for Quake 2 yeah. It was updated when Quake 3 came out but not 4 because at that point some other company (Valve) had bought the rights to the game and the Valve engine (Which strangely is based off the Quake 2 engine) supported the multi class thing much better. TFC was released as a third party mod, later bought by Valve. TF2 was planned to be a realistic shooter (not unlike CS) but was canned. Pretty sure I got it all

Close enough, as always Wikipedia helps out: click. TFC was originally a mod that was then picked up by Valve, as CS was.

I've played a lot of TFC, and I did try some original TF once (enquiring minds wanted to know!) and even tried an Unreal version too (which was crap since no one was online to play with). Played a lot on Drippy's 2Fort. TF2 went through a ton of iterations as the commentary says. Really interesting stuff

Actually, I think the original Team Fortress was for Quake - not Quake 2. Quakeworld was for Quake, right? So, yes - Quake not Quake 2. Old stuff, eh? Who remembers jerking through the original Quake - before Carmack invented Quakeworld - on a 200+ ms ping on dial up? Heady days!

I think the first game I played online was Medal of Honor: Allied Assault - was addicted to that game. But I remember ridiculous pings of like 150 or so trying to play on dial-up! I think I went from that to CS:S where I was in BSF and then onto TF2 & WDG Played a bit of other stuff in between like BF2 (all I wanted to do was unlock the SA80) and also CoD4 and Ut2k4.
