So here I am again with more headset/microphone related troubles.

Started a little while ago when Deadly mentioned that he couldn't hear me talking on TF2. For some reason the mic wasn't being detected, nor could I hear myself blowing into it, if that made sense.

So I play around a little with some of the settings on steam, and eventually made what seemed to be progress. Now, anyone who speaks to me over steam can hear themselves being played back through my microphone, resulting in both of us hearing an echo.

Thing is, this happens even when the mic isn't plugged in (its a fatality creative pro gamer headset - the mic plugs into the headset itself).

I've no idea if this is a hardware issue or whether i've messed up some settings on steam or on windows. Has anyone got any idea what might be causing the issue? I really don't want to have to buy another new headset as I like this pair, and if the same happens on my new set i'll go mad! Sad

That sounds to me like you selected your Wave output as recording source.

Go to windows recording volume seetings, turn off "What U Hear" or "Wave out" or whatever your sound driver happens to call it, and turn up the mic instead.

Well, despite your sound settings being a bit messed up, thank good it seems only the mic is broken.

Thanks to r007 for the help. Unfortunately it seems the mic itself is bust - so i've ordered a replacement mic that I can plug into my headset. If that doesn't work, then something has gone wrong with the wires inside the headset cable itself and i've no idea how to fix that Tongue

Nah - the mic itself is one of those little flexible mini-mics that plugs into the headset itself, the kind of things used with laptops, etc. Just bought one off e-bay for less than £4!
