I played the first one when if first came out and all those many moons ago, then I moved over to console gaming and missed this whole Unreal revival! I want back in on the Unreal groovey train after all these years. I'm hearing that Unreal Tournament 2004 is the best of them, but I want to get the opinion of you bunch of scumbags .

Not played that for donkeys years. I thought it was great at the time but I don't think I'll ever play it again. Those big hard monster things in the first couple of levels remind me of the Tank.

I only really played the best one of them for more than a few hours, the original Unreal Tournament!

Original UT is great but looks dated, of course. UT2004 is packed with maps and is very tweakable. UT 3 is a bit of a dog in my opinion - very uninspired, takes itself too seriously.

Loved unreal. For the time when 3D cards were beging to become more avalible, the flat workd of Doom and Quake was becoming so much more. So when unreal came out it was easy to tell in that first level that they were out to impress you with the big open area and the water fall. Also pitching you against a huge bugger that shot at you with mini rockets while you had the complimentary just-starting-the-game-can-hardly-pierce-cardboard pistol. I remeber bricking it on if this was the first encounter, than how hard was it going to be later in the game? But an inspired game. The eight-ball launcher, press and hold the triger to load up multipul barrels and then let loose. The creepy ges-bio rifel with the green goo of nasty booby trapped death. A gun that fires decapitating disks! AWSOME!

As the game moved on the single player part gave way to the deathmatch against bots and the living began to progress. I spent many a happy hour playing "Unreal Tournament" with Fade over a LAN. He was a total swine if he got his hands on the mini gun and it was safer not to re-spawn if he had found the Flack Cannon. I've still got the game installed and once in a blue moon I do go bot hunting. An awsome amount of levels tailoring to both the close quaters lovers, all the way to the wide open sniper hell spaces. And a smeg load of comunity conmtent in mods and maps.

Now unfortunatly I never owned or played Unreal Tounament 2004. However I did see it being played on a friends PC and it was very pritty and very nice. Back then i didn't have the spec to run it, I might have now so could be a good item to get. The game looked very prety and very polished. So go and get yourself a copy of the game and have fun. I can already feel the pull of many an on-line games store, trying to separate me from my cash! Damm, too late! Looks like "Unreal Anthology" is calling my name.

Played only 04 and 3. Loved 04 and liked 3, but it was too close to 04 for me. After several years daily playing the same over and over again, it gets boring and 3 did not enough new for me

Steam got a really good package: Unreal, Unreal 2, UT1, UT04 (UT03 NEVER EXISTED!!!111), UT3 for 40$.

Loved Unreal and the first Unreal Tournament - much preferred to Quake 3 probably because of the different game mode types. I would suggest Unreal Tournament the original if you want to play around with bots. Haven't tried the later iterations.

I loved the first Unreal Tournament, especially the flack cannon.  I also remember an official map where you could trap people in a room then flick a switch and they'd explode.

Never really played online shooters after that apart from Planetside and of course TF2.

ut2004 is the best one by far atm... ut3 is too power hungry and as claws says, takes itself too seriously!

2004 uses the u3 engine too... so itll work on any machine  as long as you have a graphics card... doesnt matter which one... bet you could play it on a macintosh

I love UT 2004, one of my best gaming moments was the semi final match for UT in a local LAN party, was absolutely neck and neck to the point where it came down to the last frag we rounded a corner, both fired and i actually stood up to congratulate the guy becasue i thought he had me, but somehow i'd managed to flak him before his rocket hit!
I got totally wiped in the final, but still - love the game.

Playing with instagib shock rifles is awesome too, even twitchier than counterstrike.

Q3 was another gem back in the day, utter madness.
