Interesting, but flawed. There's nothing really new here. Games like Eve Online already provide the kind of player driven dynamics that they are aiming for.

I don't really see the whole "Invent new things" being possible to implement in a realistic way. It'll more likely end up as a "skill up your woodcarving and create a spear" type situation.  Anything more realistic would be a nightmare to try and program a realistic full world physics simulation, or really really boring to play ("Oh look, I just spent 8 months real time dusk til dawn in repetitive labour setting up my farm, but there's been a drought and now I'm dead") History may prove me wrong but I don't think there's a significant market out there for medieval peasant simulators.

Would the storage for that game not need to be huge? I don't have a clue how that stuff works tbh, just assuming it would take up a load of disk/server space

Well, the Idea is hardly new. It's the ultimate consequence of "open world" games.
But as you may know from other such games (Mineraft and Eve come to mind), this won't work without copious amounts of simplification.
You can't just go around and simulate every, say, cubic decimeter (which I think would leave contraptions in a manageable size) of matter on the earth's surface, down to a certain depth. The amount of computations necessary for even simple pyhsics simulation, say gravity and friction (which again I think would get you quite a stretch already) is mind-boggling.
As Zarf said, unless they simplify the machanics down to a computationally tractable amount, it won't work, and then it'll only be the next Minecraft or something of sorts. I think they're making the mistake of seeing bits and pieces of what they want readily available and it being only a matter of money to get them to work together:
- "Realistic" Physics from closed-world games (Think shooters)
- Open world with modification (think Minecraft)
- Massive Player amounts (Think Planetside)

Sounds brilliant in theory but what you have to remember a large amount of the players will be male American teenagers and therefore assholes.

Hmmmm yeah you do have a point, like how would you discover swords? would it be like GMOD and you just stick things together or would there be a level system as in to unlock gain 10xp?
